COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A deep amber colored American ale, featuring a rich malty body. Cascade and Willamette hops add a complex hop flavor and aroma. This ale is exceptionally balanced between malty sweetness and delicate hop bitterness.

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2005 Bottle... Dark, clear, amber ale. Tiny, off-white head. The nose is sort of non-descript, but itís up against cigar smoke and something with a lot of vinegar just down the bar. Well-balanced flavor. Medium bitter and lightly tangy. Light-bodied and watery with medium carbonation. Finishes lightly bitter and dry.

Bottle acquired in trade with Johnathan3584 (thanks!) Poured a dark amber color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, and oranges. Tastes of the same. A little on the earthy side as well. Thinner body.

A red ale with a touch of roasted malt that makes it on the Scottish heritage given Highlandís theme. Itís in the aroma, and the aroma gives off a booziness far behind its ranking. Quite malty and medium plus mouthfeel, with hop bitterness rounding off the finish.Reddish brown colour with white foam covering.

Bottle from Whole Foods Raleigh. Pours strawberry red with a medium head. Bitter malt aroma. Taste is slightly tart and slightly hoppy. Very drinkable and very pleasant.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a large, fluffy, light brown heead and a hazy amber body. Good retention and lacing. Aroma is malty and a bit peety...Very sweet with some dark fruits. Taste is malty, sweet with some dark fruits and cereal. Its also a bit husky with a bit of alcohol uncovered in the finish. Somewhat warming for a 5.8% beer, water like mouthfeel with tingly little bubbles.

My Bottom Line :
Suave caramelized cereals develop pleasant toasted and fruity nuances before a balancing resinous, leafy hop bitterness seals this competent Amber Ale .

Further Personal Perceptions :
-.A ring of foam circles the deep russet.
-The aroma also has burnt toffee subtleties which are quite pleasant.
-Carbonation is soft and residual sugars plump, making for a wealthy mouthfeel, especially for the style.
-Hops contribute subtle citrusy fruitiness, but mostly shine in the finish.
-Even though I am not a fan of the style, I have to say the malt structure and flavor in this one are compelling.

Bottle.

Thanks to Suttree for this. Copper pour with medium, off-white head. Aroma of malt, toffee, nuts, some hops. Tastes malty, with hops, toffee, and slight cognac elements. Smooth finish. This one is very good.

Acquired via trade. This was pretty good, deserving of this brewery's "flagship beer" status. Pours a deep amber color with a medium and foamy light tan head. Aroma of malt and caramel. Medium-bodied with an assertive malt flavor and a touch of hops. Finish is sweet but not overly so. Not bad at all.

Bottle, at Kookfest, September 2006 (and previously at the brewery but my notes were insufficient). I was going to say this wasnít very Scottish in character but see that its on the site as an Amber Ale, which is probably nearer the mark. Copper colour. Lots of caramel malt character in evidence but also a quite strong, resiny hop presence. I didnít feel the two elements married perfectly. Not bad, but nothing special.

Bottle. Sweet apple-cherry malt aroma. Reddish amber color with small head. Lightly sweet apple cider and malt flavor with a touch of lemon and mild hops finish. Nicely drinkable.
