COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Released Sept 21, 2008 (the day after brewgrass). The next brew in our renowned imperial line, this hearty stout is rich with coffee and chocolate notes, all achieved solely through the use of special roasted barley grains. The complex malt character blends the velvety sweetness of specialty grains with the creaminess of a classic stout. No flavoring has been added to this product.

Originally reviewed: 9/29/09. Pretty pumped to see a few bottles of this left on the shelf. Poured into my tulip glass. Pours a thick dirty oil-black with a thin tan head on top. Retention is weak, and there is no lacing present. Smells of dark fruits, hints of chocolate, and some mild roasted characters. This isn’t as roasty as I thought it would be. Smells more sweet than anything. The mouth is creamy and smooth. Carbonation level is moderate. Slight astringent bite on the finish, but nothing too harsh. The flavor is more fruity and creamy, like the scent. I was expecting big chocolate flavors, but am struggling to find much. Some bitter coffee finishes this one out. All in all, this wasn’t what I was expecting and it wasn’t as balanced as I had hoped either, but still a good beer. Glad I got the chance.

Another impy stout with a little bit of age on it. A nice roastiness with some bitterness and vanilla. Finish has some prune and grassy hops. Soy sauce is a little muted than what it could be but still here. A good drink but when put up against the leaders it falls a little short

Bottle (rated in Nov 2009). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, husks), with notes of vanilla and alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean, slightly husky. Medium to full body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.

2007 vintage. Pours pitch black with a half finger light mocha colored head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal spots of lace left behind. Slightly roasted aroma with lots of dark malt notes. Hints of chocolate, oatmeal and coffee bean. Subtle alcohol. Medium bodied with lots of silky chocolate maltiness that adds some sweetness to counter the deep roasted characteristic. Roasted but not as bold as I expected. Hints of oatmeal and dark chocolate and coffee bean. Subtle lactic creaminess smooths things out and makes this beer very quaffable. Slight alcohol sweetness adds balance but there is hardly any heat at all. Abv very well masked.

Retired my foot. Draft pint at the brewery. Easy to drink and technically perfect. Light coffee character and exceptionally drinkable. (#4336, 10/7/2011)

Pours pitch black with small tan fizz. Smells just like black (dark) chocolate and coffee. Tastes like bitter chocolate, a bit of iced coffee, and some roastiness. Full-bodied with a smooth, silky texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Highland Imperial Black Mocha Stout finishes with a bit of chocolate and coffee bitterness.

solid, impenetrable pitch black, small mild brown head. low retention rate, strong lacing. not a big nose, some roasted malts, chocolate, hints of coffee, some light sour notes. I had this fresh, just going through my notebooks. Strong coffee and chocolate notes in the flavors. decent hop characteristics.

Pours a silky black body with a chocolate covered head. It smells of coffee and chocolate wrapped up into a candy bar. The taste is of chocolate and roasted malts with a hint of burnt coffee in the back. The beer is extremely smooth but seems like it lost a little flavor due to the age. Overall this beer was good but was probably great a year ago.
