At 9% ABV it sits nicely beside our Orkney Porter, also 9%, and is the first time we’ve brewed a barley wine. A lovely deep amber in colour, we loaded it full of American hops - and then we put some more in! All in the interest of balance, it also contains a small mountain of Maris Otter pale malt.

Bottle. Very promising, sweet malty aroma. Golden, clear with low, white head. Tastes fantastic- intensive sweetness is balanced with medium bitterness. Thanks to that, this beer isn’t tiring. All in all, the best Barley Wine I’ve ever tried.

Bottle: Deep golden, clear, small loose off-white head; solid sweetish nose of dried fruits and sweet pale malt with a pretty distinctive bitter-hoppy background; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, almost full bodied; solid lingering bitter-sweet finish with dried fruits, nuts and caramalt, followed by a slight alcohol-burn in the aftertaste. Well balanced,easy-drinking thirst-quencher. ..

Bottle, pours clear amber with small white head. Aroma of caramel, white fruits, white wine and hard candies. High sweetness Woth some light bitterness in finish. I’m missing some balance. Solid but not outstanding.

W aromacie kwiaty, miód pitny i nuty chleba razowego. W smaku przyjemnie słodkie, trochę landrynkowe. Goryczka średnia, znikająca pod słodowym finiszem. Piwo może nie powala ale piję je z przyjemnością.

Medium deep offwhite head. Clear amber body. Perfumy dried fruit aroma with candy notes. Dry-sweet resiny dried fruit taste with toffee and floral marzipan notes. Full-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish rock candy, toffee, and resin aftertaste with funky herbal caramelly notes. Very interesting, and different beer. Has nothing to do with Norway apart from the kjenge (horse’s heads wrong way, but whatever) on the label, but a lovely beer. (0.33l bottle, from Cornelius, Edinburgh.)

Aroma: fruits, raisins, a little wine, a little caramel, a little alcohol. Appearance: brown; clear; head medium plus, fairly stable. Taste: bittersweet, a bit sour. Palate: body full; carbonation soft; mouth feel fairly spicy; finish sweet, spicy. Overall: very nice; intense, fruity, alcoholic. For 8%, the alcohol’s not terribly well hidden, but it isn’t offensive, more a spice. Very good.

330ml bottle, from trade with AshtonMcCobb. Many thanks! Pours hazy amber, thin ring of white head. Aroma is rich caramel and uncertain alcohol spirit. Taste is slick rich caramel, nice dried fruits with a boozy warmth on the finish. Not usually one for Barley Wines but this is rather nice.
