Cask; Regular. Also available bottled.

Appearance: pale and golden in colour.
Nose: rich fruity malt hints of yeast, with earthy, woody, hop with honey and alcohol notes.
Palate: generously malty with balanced spicy hop in the middle leading, to a lingering hop finish, with honeyed fruity malt and a hint of warming alcohol.
Summary: a stunning stronger ale in the true british fashion, with balanced flavours from maris otter malt and English hops added early and late in the copper. One to take great care with as it is so drinkable.

Bourbon cream nose, little in the way of a head a’top a stern well varnished brown mahogany body. Stickily cheap fudge initial taste, leaving enough width for your fillings to get filled with a malt storm that brings the ABV to the forefront cautiously. Slight TCP burn on the finish keeps the glass on the table long enough to appreciate the effort of what is easily their flagship brew in my book. (Cask, Highland Taps Takeover, Cloisters)

Cask @ Gallows Bird. Pours a deep gold with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet with fruit. Taste is fruity and sweet with malts, caramel. Some cherry in the finish. Turns a dry wood and grass in the aftertaste.

Cask at the Gallows Bird XV Real Ale Festival, Espoo, Finland.
Clear deep golden colour with tiny white head. Mild fruity sweetness and fruit liqueur like elements in aroma. Alcohol, sweet fruits, mild bitterness, sugar and some malt in flavour. Not that tasty. Flat.

Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2008. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear copper red in colour with a thin white head. Fresh watermelon in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Mixed malts give a thick chewy maltloaf base with syrupy raisins, sultanas, cherries and then drier redcurrants. Floral hop resins impart a strong spicy kick to the lively aftertaste. Sweet malt returns in the robust malty finish with glycerine fruit and booming alcohol notes warming in the throat. A superb Strong Ale and well recommended.

Aroma: Difficult to detect. Quite bready.

Appearance: Light amber, clear body. Small white head. Good carbonation.

Taste: Smokey, lightly spiced, doughy taste. Hints of lemon. Sharp, bitter finish.

Palate: Oily mouthfeel. Excellent carbonation.

Overall: Another strong, tasty ale from the island of Orkney. This one is delicious.

On cask at Cloisters. Pours a golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel and yeast. Similar flavours with lingering grassy hops and an alcohol hum. Mild carbonation and an oily mouth-feel.

Un assaggio al The Rake, non malvagia pale ale da 6° alc., ma non mi ha convinto a tal punto di prenderla

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2012 Take 2 - Bandstand Bar, Nairn 040812
Aroma - sweet fruity malts, straw hops, soft zest, citrus orange
Taste - rich sweet fruity syrupy malts, bitter hop background, soft orange zest, some bitter orange, touch of pale toffee malts, very slight rubber, alcohol too noticeable for abv
Palate - soft carb, medium body, oily, bit dry, bittersweet juicy malt finish with a hint of cereal
Overall - It’s just too boozy and somewhat cloying. I’m not a fan of this - no change to the rating - it’s still 3.1

Cask @ Blackfriars, Inverness 111011 7/3/6/3/12
Golden amber, clear, thin white head.
Aroma of sweet golden malt, sweet fruits, orange, apricot, rich sweet marmalade.
Taste similar to aroma, but not quite as good. The alcohol was quite noticeable.
Palate - sweet, soft carb, oily, syrupy malts. Finish - Sweet apricot with some citric bitterness. Bitter overhang with warming alcohol.
The aroma was good, but the taste didn’t quit match the aroma. Seemed good at first, but by the end of the 1/2 pint, the malts seemed a bit cloying and syrupy, and it was rather boozy for 6%.

Bottled. Hazy glden, coarse head. Spicy fruity nose. Mid sweet with soft, dense mouthfeel and solidbody. Creamy buttery malt and some spicy bitterness. Mild, pleasant and gently warming.

Bottle at Per’s. Slightly hazy amber body, small fast disappearing white head. Fresh fruity malty taste, light bubblegum. Fine distinctly fruity taste, peaches. Light bitter taste. This is actually quite tasty. Not terribly complex, definitely tasty.
