3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2008. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear copper red in colour with a thin white head. Fresh watermelon in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Mixed malts give a thick chewy maltloaf base with syrupy raisins, sultanas, cherries and then drier redcurrants. Floral hop resins impart a strong spicy kick to the lively aftertaste. Sweet malt returns in the robust malty finish with glycerine fruit and booming alcohol notes warming in the throat. A superb Strong Ale and well recommended.

Aroma: Difficult to detect. Quite bready.
Appearance: Light amber, clear body. Small white head. Good carbonation.
Taste: Smokey, lightly spiced, doughy taste. Hints of lemon. Sharp, bitter finish.
Palate: Oily mouthfeel. Excellent carbonation.
Overall: Another strong, tasty ale from the island of Orkney. This one is delicious.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2012 Take 2 - Bandstand Bar, Nairn 040812
Aroma - sweet fruity malts, straw hops, soft zest, citrus orange
Taste - rich sweet fruity syrupy malts, bitter hop background, soft orange zest, some bitter orange, touch of pale toffee malts, very slight rubber, alcohol too noticeable for abv
Palate - soft carb, medium body, oily, bit dry, bittersweet juicy malt finish with a hint of cereal
Overall - Itís just too boozy and somewhat cloying. Iím not a fan of this - no change to the rating - itís still 3.1
Cask @ Blackfriars, Inverness 111011 7/3/6/3/12
Golden amber, clear, thin white head.
Aroma of sweet golden malt, sweet fruits, orange, apricot, rich sweet marmalade.
Taste similar to aroma, but not quite as good. The alcohol was quite noticeable.
Palate - sweet, soft carb, oily, syrupy malts. Finish - Sweet apricot with some citric bitterness. Bitter overhang with warming alcohol.
The aroma was good, but the taste didnít quit match the aroma. Seemed good at first, but by the end of the 1/2 pint, the malts seemed a bit cloying and syrupy, and it was rather boozy for 6%.

Bottle at Perís. Slightly hazy amber body, small fast disappearing white head. Fresh fruity malty taste, light bubblegum. Fine distinctly fruity taste, peaches. Light bitter taste. This is actually quite tasty. Not terribly complex, definitely tasty.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Brilliant gold with a fine lacing lid. Same dank dishcloth, Feta and passion fruit aroma as the Orkney IPA I had last night. Fine bright hops in the mouth with a fibrous tang of citrus; Jaffa orange and pineapple. Well-rounded pale malt aftertaste with plenty of chaff, peanut and hints of smoke. Something clean cut and ringing about this I really like; imagine an oktoberfest made with US hops- no way are they all English. There is a metallic streak, but completely demolished by oranges. Orange-dented stainless steel. Squirted with fresh-squeezed orange juice. Not the slightest hint of alcohol. Cashews, oatmeal. Dangerous stuff. These boys really seem to know what theyíre doing.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2013 Re-rating, a really great cask experience - rich but refreshing.
Previous Re-rate 28/08/11 7+4+7+4+14 = 3.6. More of the cleverly integrated yeast and hops on this experience and less aware of the strength, as it comes in understatedly and finishes cleanly and elegantly.
Previous rating 20/04/11 6/3/7/4/14 = 3.4
50cl bottle. Pours an orange colour with steady bubbles and a good frothy head. The nose is of pale malt and nettles. The taste has more pale malt and nettles, also some hay and perhaps an apple note. The palate is fairly light in body and structure and there is a very long refreshing structure. Overall, I think I could drink it all night,

Cask - Stromness. Very fruity smell, passion fruit and perhaps pear. Light color, somewhat murky. Sharp first taste with a lingering, but mild, aftertaste.
Sign at the bar said 2010 Scottish Beer Champ, though I have not verified this.
