Cask; Regular. Also available bottled at 4.4%.

Appearance: golden & sparkling in the glass.
Nose: hints of fruit esters and malt, with light hop notes. Also, if fresh, will have a nutty bread dough yeasty note, that disappears when well vented.
Palate: soft nutty maltiness with accessible hoppiness. The middle is balanced, leading to a long malt hop finish, which the hops eventually win. Their fresh green notes coming through with hints of fruit esters. It becomes drier and “cleaner” drinking with longer venting.
Summary: a satisfying world class pale ale, made with maris otter pale ale malt & a blend of four hops from America, Germany, New Zealand & Slovakia. Each one selected for their spiciness and aroma and all giving that certain something to back up the wholesome maltiness provided by the maris otter.

Have had excellent pints and some not so good. Shows how a products can be altered by poor cellar work.

From cask at Ayre Hotel, Kirkwall. Served in perfect condition. Golden. Dense and persistent off-white head. Fruity and flowery aroma, with gooseberries. Sublime real ale mouthfeel. Well balanced with high drinkability. Moderate bitterness in first aftertaste, with crystal malt coming later.

50cl bottle poured into my Scapa Special pint glass. It pours a golden orange with a fantastic head and steady carbonation. The nose has sweet malt and very herbacious hops. The taste has hay and a long zingy nettley finish. The palate is rich with a long refreshing finish. So, so drinkable.

Bottled, from The Scottish Real Ale Shop, Kilmahog. Lightly hazy deep golden, rich head. Aroma of ripe fruit and hay. Mid sweet, fruity with light-medium body and soft mouthfeel. Autumnal flavours of ripe fruits and hay, light spicy bitterness. Tasty, well balanced and nicekly drinkable.

Cask at Thomsons. Pours a clear golden amber, thick foamy white head. Aromas has biscuit, orange and resin. Taste has more of the same, and a lovely biscuity finish. Very nice.

Cask at the Market Porter, Southwark, London 27-10-07 Pours a dark golden colour with thin white head. Not much of an aroma detected but what there was came across as possibly fruity. Tasted pleasantly bitter and started off great, wonderful fullness of flavour lovely maltiness and bitterness, quite dry towards the end, but it never quite pulled it off and failed to be the truly great beer that I thought it might be. Coulda’ been a contender!
