Toasty with some light sweetness, some caramel and noticable dried fruits. Flavour is very fruity, plums, cherries, berries, sweet toast and caramel. Clean malts. Long fruity finish. Nice brew. Sweet flavour shows more caramel and chocolate in the malt profile. Balanced hoppiness. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

Caramelly malt Kool-aid aroma.
Sweet malts, touch of earth and hops. Some whisky-like aspects too… maybe some peaty earty. Maybe some roasty malt thrown in too.
Taste is pretty good, though, tastes like a malty american barleywine that has been aged a year.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 18, 2006 Darker than I had expected, but didn’t really know what I was getting myself into with this beer. A bit of chocilate and roast in the smell, minimal head. Some malts in the taste and a bit of alcohol in the aftertaste, especially if you take largers sips - otherwise very balanced and fairly unnoticeable. I like the Oatmeal Porter, didn’t like the Gaelic, and I am very pleased with this beer, my third Highland. PorterPounder (3137), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 6, 2006 Habersham Beverage Warehouse, Savannah, Ga. - 22 oz bomber. Dark ruby red appearance, thin but stiocky mocha colored head that leaves thin lacing. Fresh, chocolatey aroma, hints of horehound candy and cinnamon. Full bodied flavor with hints of chocolate, some smoky notes, earthiness and a hint of day old coffee. Mouthfeel is thick enough. Very good - as is most from this brewer. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 6, 2006 (Bottle 65 cl) Pours a clear, dark brown with a warm, orangey glow. Lightly creamy, beige head. Full, malty aroma. Rich and full body with loads of roasted malt. Accents of overripe fruit and plums. Dry finish with vague burned notes. Very lovely indeed. 170406 jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 29, 2006 From a 22oz. brown bomber bottle with a short blurb about the ale on the left side of the label, no bottled/freshness date. Made a good appearance, poured an opaque dark chocolate brown with sediment floaties and a small foamy, bubbly pale tannish head that settled into a thin foamy lacing, moderate carbonation overall. Had a big roasted barley and chocolate malty nose with whiffs of hops and alcohol. A crisp, creamy and smooth medium bodied mouth feel, very good drinkability. Delicious sweet-ish roasted barley and chocolate malty taste upfront, a buried fruitiness, followed by a rolling on the tongue Sterling hop bitterness, a subtle peat flavored alcohol warmth in the palate and a sweet chocolate malty finish with a lingering soft hop bitterness.
A very good Scotch Ale from Highland, the use of malts and hops does a good job of masking the 8% ABV, one of the better Scotch Ales out there, well worth seeking out and trying.

Nope, now I see the chocolate malt added and you can definitely taste those bad boys. Pours a deep brown with slight red hues. Nice tan head. Aromas of roasted barley. Nice beer from the guys a little north of us.
