COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This robust porter has a full body with some hints of chocolate from the chocolate malt and midnight wheat. The mild noble hop aroma showcases the roasty flavors and subtle fruit and spice notes of the artisan-roasted Fair Trade/Organic coffee of Black Mountain, NCís Dynamite Roasting Co.

Dark beer with almost no head. Nose of green coffee beans and a little play doh. Sweet caramel flavor with some wet toast, roast grains and burnt sweetened coffee. Some celery and green stuff in the finish. The coffee flavor is pretty subtle.

355mL at my brotherís local pool bar in Gainesville, FL. Overall, a salty, bitter, Irish dry stout in body. Weaker beige head. Soapy, thinner body. Nose has salt, vanilla, soy, umami. Palate is lemon tea, toothpaste, mint.

Appearance: near black, with one finger of medium tan head and minimal lacing. Aroma: shockingly, coffee notes dominate a base of chocolate malts. Taste: acidic, almost citrusy roast coffee over bitter dark chocolate, black bread, vanilla, and salted caramel. Finish: bitter and a little lactic/acidic, with dry, roasty coffee notes remaining for awhile. Notes: A decent enough porter for sure, but the coffee note was just a bit too acidic for my tastes. Palate was also a bit watery. This much coffee needs more of a robust porter base.

very bland and mild, weird for a beer this dark and "heavy", slight coffee taste

From bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma was all espresso, chocolate and roasted malt. Taste followed with a slight vanilla sweetness.

12 oz bottle (one by me, one by jmborggren). Pours brown with a medium beige head that doesnít last. The aroma is pleasing, roasted malts, coffee, light chocolate notes with some mild earthy notes. The flavor has much of the same; roast, coffee, chocolate and some earthy notes. Maybe a touch thin. Decent overall.

Bottle to snifter (thanks jmborggren). Looks solid; a semi-opaque cola with off-white lacing. Smells and tastes of bitter coffee and dark malt. Average on the palate. Solid, but not spectacular.

Sample at Mellow Mushroom in Johnson City. Brownish-black pour with a medium beige head that dissipates steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee, malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of toasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Hops in the background as well. The finish is roasty with a black coffee aftertaste. Above average overall.

Beer #14 Asheville trip. Had this on tap at Jack of the Wood. Pity that we didnít have time to go by Highland itself, but time is always limited, and at least I got to try a really nice one. Pours black, nice head. Aroma of espresso and chocolate. Flavor matches. A bit of vague fruity character in the background. Came across bigger than it really was, with a touch of warming alcohol on the finish. Very nicely done, my favorite brew sampled at Jack of the Wood.

Pours black from the bottle, with a foamy, mocha-brown head. The aroma is distinctly reminiscent of coffee and milk, with a bit of milk chocolate and some kind of dry mineral character beneath. The flavor is pleasantly mild, with a light coffee bitterness and lactose sweetness predominating, although some herbal hops and bittersweet chocolate are also present. Overall, although the flavor is a bit dominated by the coffee character, it doesnít change the impression of this beer as a pleasant, drinkable porter.
