3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice deep dark brown coloured body with a thin, one centimetre tall creamy tan head. Aroma of coffee, roasted nuts, earth, caramel and a bit of cardboard. Medium-bodied; Deep roasty flavour with a ton of caramel, a lot of vanilla, some oak, a hint of bourbon and a nice rich coffee flavour. Aftertaste shows a good complexity with cream, nuts, medicinal flavours and a hint of pit fruits. Overall, a nice and full flavoured beer with some good and unexpected flavours. Not an out-of-this-world beer, but good for sure. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 04-January-2013 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 05-March-2013.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 ounce bottle - $1.69 at Charlie’s Beer and Wine in Marietta, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours what appears to be an essentially black body with a full, thick finger of medium-tan-hued foam.
Smell: Roasty, coffee-accented nose with a touch of bitter chocolate and increasingly fainter, lighter notes of caramel, pale malts, spicy hops, and fruit.
Taste: Roasty coffee and bitterish chocolate mingled with the base pale malts. Some thin traces of caramel, maybe even a fat drop of molasses in there as well. Very low fruitiness. Modestly spicy hops aided a bit by the roast, the carbonation, and wheat. Roasty finish with some of that dark chocolate lingering into the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation, though there’s an added skosh of crispness on the tail end of the swallow.
Overall: A solid, enjoyable coffee-infused porter.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tarry, creosotic aroma. Dep clear cola brown-black. Standard US longneck, good label. Quick cascade and one-finger, lasting tan head in a pint. Good. Acidic coffee, chickory, toasted soy nuts. Dry with bitter cocoa. Medium body. Long char-coffee finish. Not for sissies. A little sweetness and very light soapiness in the very end. Very good wit bacon and basil pizza. Bottle, Momo’s.

2.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
The aroma has coffee as advertised! There is also burnt malt and a touch of brown sugar. The appearance is dark brown with a large, tan head. The taste definitely has coffee but it seems a bit rancid. The palate is thin. Overall this one was a disappointment for me, it had great potential in the aroma but something about the taste was not enjoyable.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours dark black with chestnut brown edges and one finger of tan head. Nose is very nice, molasses and sweet java notes. Lots of chocolate and a light roast. Coffee flavor is a tad weak. Spent grounds and bitter bakers chocolate. Noticeable acidity from the coffee and dark grain. Medium body with a slightly thin feel and almost absent carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Listen closely and you can hear Brian Johnson. Was pleased by how solid this one was, and that’s more or less what I expected from Highland - they usually do the chocolate malt and coffee interface pretty well. This one could have been more full bodied, I suppose, but it had a bracing, lively roasted quality to it that recalled fresh Bells Java.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, thanks ethan for sharing. Deep brown with a chocolate milk like sudsy head with plentiful lace against my mini imperial glass courtesy of Durham Central Park. Nose is cocoa, light coffee, light fruit. Nice, not overwhelming but nice. Roasty, dark chocolate, light espresso. very easy drinking, light bitterness in the finish. Solid and like everything Highland makes, English style so don’t go judging this against Hill Farmstead Everett or anything amazing like that.

Bottle shared at RBWG 2012. Pours a dark brown with a small off white head. The aroma is a strong roast and coffee. Medium mouthfeel with a roadsted coffed with a nice spicey finish. A very good porter from Highland.
