Great black pour with fading tan head. Nice roasty clean fresh coffee aroma, some vanilla. Flavor has more of the roast grounds bitterness and not as much balance. Meh. One of the better coffee beers out there, but Iím not a fan of coffee.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Samís, Durham. Listen closely and you can hear Brian Johnson. Was pleased by how solid this one was, and thatís more or less what I expected from Highland - they usually do the chocolate malt and coffee interface pretty well. This one could have been more full bodied, I suppose, but it had a bracing, lively roasted quality to it that recalled fresh Bells Java.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark beer with almost no head. Nose of green coffee beans and a little play doh. Sweet caramel flavor with some wet toast, roast grains and burnt sweetened coffee. Some celery and green stuff in the finish. The coffee flavor is pretty subtle.

Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours black with a thin khaki head that doesnít leave any lacing. Nice coffee aroma. They did a good job with the roasting. The coffee complements the porter base nicely. Clean finish. Very tasty. I wish I had another bottle of this.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle courtesy of durhambeer!
Pours basically black with a small but well retained head that leaves small bits of lacing on the glass.
The beer has a nice roasty and fruity smell. The coffee is vibrant and pungent and not unlike walking into my dearest Zanzibarís Coffee house here in town while the roaster is doing her thing.
The flavor is roasty and bitter with a little bit of creamy sweetness. The beer isnít overly sweet but does have a little bit of ashy-ness.
The palate is a little bit think but the low carbonation serves the flavor perfectly.

UPDATED: JAN 30, 2016 Beer #14 Asheville trip. Had this on tap at Jack of the Wood. Pity that we didnít have time to go by Highland itself, but time is always limited, and at least I got to try a really nice one. Pours black, nice head. Aroma of espresso and chocolate. Flavor matches. A bit of vague fruity character in the background. Came across bigger than it really was, with a touch of warming alcohol on the finish. Very nicely done, my favorite brew sampled at Jack of the Wood. RERATE: Basically 3 years later on another trip to Asheville, this time at the hotel bar. And it was exactly how I remembered it, without realizing I had already tried it. No changes here.
