COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This robust porter has a full body with some hints of chocolate from the chocolate malt and midnight wheat. The mild noble hop aroma showcases the roasty flavors and subtle fruit and spice notes of the artisan-roasted Fair Trade/Organic coffee of Black Mountain, NC’s Dynamite Roasting Co.

Bottle, thanks ethan for sharing. Deep brown with a chocolate milk like sudsy head with plentiful lace against my mini imperial glass courtesy of Durham Central Park. Nose is cocoa, light coffee, light fruit. Nice, not overwhelming but nice. Roasty, dark chocolate, light espresso. very easy drinking, light bitterness in the finish. Solid and like everything Highland makes, English style so don’t go judging this against Hill Farmstead Everett or anything amazing like that.

Bottle. Pours black, thin brown head. Roasty coffee aroma, a little bit of dark chocolate and fruit. Taste is mild sweet. Medium full body, average carbonation, nice balance finish with the coffee and mild bitter hops. Overall flavor is pretty good, not as good as their Oatmeal Porter.

12oz bottle from JCB, thanks Jason! Pours a black body with a finger-width, creamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is slightly stale, cheaper smelling coffee with some sourness. A good amount of milky dark chocolate malts with a moderate sweetness as well as a light roast, vanilla, and touch of bitterness. There is a bit of a spice to this that comes out more as it warms. Flavor is better. The coffee is big and does taste a bit cheap, but its not as stale as the aroma. A light herbal hopping in the middle blends nicely with the coffee. Solid milky dark chocolate malt backing offering a medium-light sweetness with some vanilla as well. Coffee picks up towards the end with a bit of a creme as this finishes with a light-medium, roasty, herbal, coffee bitterness that dries with just enough of a chocolate sweetness before leaving a lengthy aftertaste with a touch of ash coming out. Medium, smooth body with a moderate carbonation. Overall, not a bad coffee porter. The coffee isn’t my favorite variety, but its well balanced with a nice chocolate malt sweetness and light hopping. Finishes well and remains easy drinking throughout.

Appearance Black, pours a modest but creamy head. Aroma Roasted coffee beans, hint of chocolate; not overpowering. Taste Coffee is evident, but it’s fairly mild. There’s not an awful lot of character or body to this beer. It’s satisfying though, and the hint of coffee (less than you might expect from the aroma) does give it a bit of something extra — I suspect that otherwise this might be a rather bland porter. Overall I’m sampling through the beers of Highland Brewing Company, a brewery which I had not heard before I came to North Carolina. They’re located in Asheville, and their beers are readily available in Chapel Hill. The branding is a bit silly, with a bearded guy armed with a back pipe and a pint in the label. So, they’re trying to be Scottish, and I guess that their beers are somewhat influenced by Scottish brewing traditions, but they’re no match really. Still, their range of products looks nice, and they do make some decent, affordable beers.

Pours dark brown in color with a tan head. Definitely a lot of coffee on the aroma. Also a fair amount of sugar with a soft spice quality. A bit of dark chocolate and some roasted malts as well. The coffee comes through on the palate, as does the coffee and roasted malt. There seems to be a hint of vanilla sweetness on the back end of the flavor and there is just a little bit of bitterness, too.

Pours very dark mahogany with only a little bit of head. Taste is mostly malty java flavor with a bit of sour bitterness. There is a bit of chalkiness to this beer that is slightly off-putting but this is still a pretty good beer. I am not the biggest porter fan but this one is definitely not bad.

12 oz. bottle. The aroma is coffee, bitter chocolate, and black bread. The flavor is sweet, malty, and mildly bitter. The palate is medium, chalky, and smooth. Overall, this is a light, well balanced, and flavorful beer.

Very dark, almost black beer with a tan head. Very strong aromas of dark coffee. The taste follows the nose quite closely. Tastes of bitter dark coffee, a bit nutty, and has some lactic flavoring. Chalky, dry mouth feel. Bitter coffee finish. This was a sipper, I found the bitter flavors to be a bit overpowering, could have done with some more sweet. Still a tasty porter.

Deep brown almost black color with nice tan lacing. Very roasted and nutty nose. The palate also has a pretty intense coffee and dark roasted characteristic. Hinges on being a little over the top. Definitely a good 12 oz beer to share. Drink in cool/cold weather.
