This robust porter has a full body with some hints of chocolate from the chocolate malt and midnight wheat. The mild noble hop aroma showcases the roasty flavors and subtle fruit and spice notes of the artisan-roasted Fair Trade/Organic coffee of Black Mountain, NC’s Dynamite Roasting Co.

Bottle. Pours jet black with an off white head. Aroma is coffee and roasted malt. Silky smooth mouthfeel with a well balanced dark malt flavor from start to finish. Just the right amount of carbonation and alcohol.to make this a superb porter. Well done. Would pair well with a frozen desert or ice cream.

Originally reviewed: 12/30/11. One of my more anticipated new NC beers to try, so I was excited to see this one on tap at City Bev in town. A huge rocky tan head capped this mother off. The nose was strong with roasted coffee and chocolate powder. I really am digging the freshly ground aroma. Nice strong coffee presence. The body is moderate-to-full, yet still drinkable. The alcohol level must be low, because this one is disappearing quickly. Big coffee notes, chocolate, slight nutty presence melded within. Dang. This one delivered. My new favorite Highland offering. Now to seek out some bottles...

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a small-to-moderate head. Good coffee notes in the nose, though the smell isn’t too strong. Great roasting and coffee flavors to this, which manage to be smooth on the palate despite the harsher flavors. Very nice brew.

12oz bottle poured into snifter. Wow! Amazing coffee aroma. Can’t remember the last beer I had that was overwhelmed with this much coffee aroma. Flavor is bitter with hints of dark chocolate and coffee bean. A real treat and surprise.

12oz bottle, received via trade with bluesandbarbq First, a big thanks to Louis for sending me this beauty. A stunning beer from beginning to end. I’ve had a few of their beers and their Mocha Stout had been my favorite, but this is now king of the hill. It pours out a dark brown/black body with a thick, creamy medium/dark tan head. Long lasting throughout the glass. It doesn’t get much better than that. Aroma is chock full of coffee/chicory goodness. You could say that’s it’s one dimensional but it’s a great dimension...lol. The flavor opens up a little more and has a little more depth than the flavor, and coming to the porter party is coffee’s good friend chocolate. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I also got some chocolate chip cookie in this beer...crazy. Mouthfeel is spot on, silky smooth..full and round and it really helps support the flavors crashing around on the palate. I couldn’t have been more happier with this product and those in the south should celebrate this beer whenever possible. It reminds me in many ways of Meantime’s coffee porter or Midnight Sun’s coffee porter, but this is better than those two I think.

My favorite Highland beer. Had in Asheville. Good coffee, not overpowering. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: ½” creamy off white head, beer is nearly black—almost no light penetration. No carbonation bubbles visible. Aroma: Coffee, Roasted Barley, Dark Chocolate Mouthfeel: medium to heavy bodied, moderately carbonated, rich, finish is similar to dark coffee. Flavor: A coffee infused porter that tastes exactly as advertised. Coffee/Expresso is the dominant flavor. In addition there is some chocolate malt, toffee, and a mild hop presence. I don’t pick up a great deal of fruit flavors as the brewer advertises, maybe some orange peel and a little raisin. Overall: very good cold weather beer, I would not be able to down this one in Summer. A give this beer a solid A grade for the style.

Good crisp aroma with notes of coffee, vanilla, hazelnut. Dark brown almost black color. Malty bitter taste at the beginning with a very strong coffee taste (as expected), smooth finish with after notes of vanilla and almond and a hint of chocolate. Overall a well made porter
