COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This robust porter has a full body with some hints of chocolate from the chocolate malt and midnight wheat. The mild noble hop aroma showcases the roasty flavors and subtle fruit and spice notes of the artisan-roasted Fair Trade/Organic coffee of Black Mountain, NC’s Dynamite Roasting Co.

12 ounce bottle - $1.69 at Charlie’s Beer and Wine in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours what appears to be an essentially black body with a full, thick finger of medium-tan-hued foam.

Smell: Roasty, coffee-accented nose with a touch of bitter chocolate and increasingly fainter, lighter notes of caramel, pale malts, spicy hops, and fruit.

Taste: Roasty coffee and bitterish chocolate mingled with the base pale malts. Some thin traces of caramel, maybe even a fat drop of molasses in there as well. Very low fruitiness. Modestly spicy hops aided a bit by the roast, the carbonation, and wheat. Roasty finish with some of that dark chocolate lingering into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation, though there’s an added skosh of crispness on the tail end of the swallow.

Overall: A solid, enjoyable coffee-infused porter.

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - 12 oz bottle. Pours jet black and thick with a sticky khaki colored head that leaves a nice coat of lacing. Luxuriant aroma with plenty of strong black coffee notes, some bittersweet chocolate. Flavor has some hints of licorice, a bit of creosote, strong espresso, bittersweet dark unsweetened chocolate and a back end of potting soil. Nice dry mouthfeel. Extremely enjoyable.

Poured into a dimpled mug and almost completely black. Excellent coffee aroma and full mouthfeel. Along with coffee hints of dark chocolate and taffy which make for a nice balance of flavor. I actually expected more out of this as I enjoy Highland’s beers. Nothing great but overall a very nice beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black. Minimal tan head that leaves very little lacing. Aroma of fresh coffee beans, milk chocolate, and toasted caramel malts. Taste is slightly smoky with coffee, chocolate, caramel, and a hint of licorice and vanilla with a backbone of toasty malts and a bit of earthy hop bitterness. Moderate length somewhat dry finish of dark malts and a slight hoppiness underlying. Palate is a bit thin with a slick texture and average carbonation. Overall a very nice coffee porter. Very fresh tasting and actually pretty crisp. An easy drinker that can also double as a dessert beer as well.

There is a medium hit of light and silky coffee on the nose but that is then replaced with pure, straight up milk chocolate. And that flavor dominates the rest of the 12oz. And I mean that in the best possible sense. The coffee flirts underneath and as it warms a bit more coffee ground bitterness does rear its head but primarily this is like hot chocolate and I liked it.

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2014 Very delicious. But I happen to be a coffee lover and that is the flavor that comes through. Pretty big mouthfeel (have gotten used to the SC lighter bodied porter)- drinks more like a stout. Totally smooth with good bitterness added from the coffee profile- not so much the hops- although they are there in the background. From the Briess website: "Midnight Wheat Malt will contribute the same color characteristics as Black Malt but without the bitter, astringent, dry flavors or aftertaste". Leaning to heavily on the coffee for some palates, but works for me. Could be my favorite from Highland Brewing.

Deep coffee aroma can't be missed! Dark complexion almost coca cola like in color. Low carbonation with limited fizz. Delicious coffee flavor that gets better as the beer warms up! Great brew worth trying!
