3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a rich deep umber black color with a finger of mocha foam. The nose is gritty earthy coffee, chocolate and some nice roasty malts and some traces of dark fruit... the palate follows the nose nicely with a good dose of carbonation to really lighten up the rich velvety mouthfeel. Nice lingering chocolate with a hint of oat coming through... dry finish.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Prohibition Pig. One of the nicest looking beers Ive come across. Pours a viscous black with thick brown head and great head retention. Aroma is coffee, light roasted maltyness, chocolate, and spuce/citrus hoppyness. Flavor is lightly sweet and creamy with nice coffee flavors and pretty assertive hop flavors. Awesome brew.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2014 Review from notes. Thanks Wally! Gorgeous pour, dense black with hints of sediment, nice frothy head. Nose was pretty great. Very smoky and still some coffee left over. Taste was decent but it’s not what it used to be as far as fresh flavors. No hop bitterness left, lots of coffee, some creamy mouth feel. Heavy bold body.
Updated 2013 Batch enjoyed at home on the day I bought it
Nice dark brown to black. 2 finger decent creamy brown head
Loaded with huge bursting coffee. bursting with chocolate as well.
Nice. very mellow, drinkable and not overpowering. Nice bitterness. roasted walnuts, chocolate and crisp minerally water. bottle conditioning is great. yeah nice beer but not pushing any limits

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared in NH, many thanks to the generous Wallace. Pours rich brown with a large, beige cream head. Nose of strong roasted malts, heavy bourbon, burnt wood. Bold flavor, hefty roast and charred wood, bitter chocolate, some woody dryness. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Hot finish with pronounced bourbon character, wood, dark and bitter chocolate, rich dark bread, lasting roast. Awesome stuff.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
From notes, served in a HF wine glass.
Clear, very dark brown color with a light, bubbly tan head. Excellent retention and thick lacing. Earthy and roast coffee aroma, with surprising amount of hops and some faint chocolate notes. Flavor is typical of an oatmeal stout, creamy and smooth, with a silky body, and a strong chocolate and malt body throughout. Minimal bitterness, but strong fresh coffee flavor throughout. Much more robust and enjoyable experience than the BA version of Earl.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Capones. Pitch black pour, small head and medium lacing. Verry peppery, jolly pump tasting, oaky brett, cocoa powders, some stone fruit at the close. Great roasty beer that still managed to keep the fruit flavors alive. Cheers.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Served on-tap at Capone’s into a sampler glass.
A - Pours jet black with a light one finger head, dissipating to small patches of head, leaving little to no lacing down the glass.
S - Lots of dark flavors in this one. Coffee, milk chocolate, and plenty of dark malt blend well. Some oatmeal and a bit of caramel sweetness creeps in as it begins to come to room temp. Good balance but nothing mind blowing.
T - A bit thin on entry. Quite a bit of dark smokiness up front giving way quickly to a mix of dark roasted coffee and chocolatey sweetness. Oatmeal adds a bit of chewiness and seems to help bring the body back up a bit. Finish is a huge blast of dark roast that lingers for some time. I liked how balanced all the flavors where.
M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. The feel is neither thin nor overly creamy, good balance again. Finish is a bit too roasty for my liking.
D - Pretty high. I wish more brewery could brew a well balanced stout like this one. I liked it quite a bit but it was just good not great. I would definitely drink it again.
