COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Earl (1911-1985) was our grandfather’s brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Stout is crafted from American malted barley, Flaked Oats, English roasted malts, American hops, Organic Guatemalan Coffee, our ale yeast, and water from our well. It is unfiltered and naturally carbonated. A silhouette of coffee and malt - an embodiment of complexity and drinkability, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Earl. 7.2% ALC/VOL 18º P Ingredients: Pale, Caramel, and Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, Columbus hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Pour from a 750 ml growler gave a dark black hued brew with a great looking mocha head. Smells of roasted chocolate malt. Medium in body and smooth. Coffee flavors mix well with the malt character without alot sweetness. The Guatemalan coffee character is good but not my favorite coffee variety but OK. Overall a very good beer.

Near black, small cocao-colored head. Roasted coffee bean, bitter chocolate, toasted malt, a lot of smoke, oak and cedar wood, perhaps a hint of vanilla. A little too much carbonation, but smooth and creamy all the same. In between medium and full bodied, bitter finish. Alcohol is low and not very apparent. A bit too much smoke in my opinion; Earl reminds me of the smoked stouts and porters I had when exploring that style

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2013 750 flip-top at home with friends. Thanks Adam!! Pour is pitch black with a creamy brown head and great lacing. Big chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roast, a touch of grass, some toffee, and wood in the aroma. Taste is super smooth and creamy, roasted malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, big espresso, grass, and oak with a lightly roasted/bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel with low carbonation. Awesome stout, I could chug this stuff.

Growler @ Stephen’s house courtesy of Steve_0. Big thanks! Pours a black appearance with a dark brown head. Moderately roasty, dark chocolate, oaty, light coffee aroma. Burnt chocolate, mild anise, coffee, light vanilla, moderately bitter hoppy flavor. Pretty tasty.

Pour out of 750 mL growler, big thanks Stephen! Thick black pour with creamy tan head, aroma brought notes of coffee, roast, dark chocolate, hints of toffee, nice earth, grain and spice notes, coffee ground notes with some vanilla. Taste is a mix of vanilla, coffee, roast, nice chocolate, baker’s chocolate, coffee bean, espresso, hints of earth, spice, finishing fairly sweet, bit nice and roasted and bitter. Nice.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2014 Sampled at the brewery. Pours black. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts plus floral hops. Flavor the same. Smooth texture. A great stout. Edit: 500ml bottle and sampled again at the brewery. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, some light cereal, and a touch of hops. Smooth texture. Still a great coffee stout.

Growler. Big whiff of coffee in the nose, roasty as hell, oats & caramely roast on the palate. Not super complex; just beautifully blended. Approaching best-of-style. Jesus, Shaun & crew did it again.

Pours a rich deep umber black color with a finger of mocha foam. The nose is gritty earthy coffee, chocolate and some nice roasty malts and some traces of dark fruit... the palate follows the nose nicely with a good dose of carbonation to really lighten up the rich velvety mouthfeel. Nice lingering chocolate with a hint of oat coming through... dry finish.
