4.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Huge thanks to Eric (Holland) for giving me this as an extra(!!). 500 ml bottle served in a CBS snifter.
A: Pours a solid black color with a brown head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin cap and collar that leaves some nice sticky, soapy lace down the glass.
S: Roasted malts and coffee beans up front. Some light bakers chocolate and some toffee.
T: The taste is transcendent. Milk chocolate, nice roasted malts and some chocolate covered espresso beans all fill my mouth and run across my taste buds. Delicious vanilla sweetness with a light toffee richness to it. The finish is a little bitter bakers chocolate, a hint of burnt sugar and some light molasses as well.
M: Creamy mouthfeel with a medium body. Medium low carbonation with a nice combination of roast and sweet notes on the finish with just a hint of dryness. The drinkability is off the charts.
O: This is an incredibly decadent treat. Rich and creamy with great notes of roast, chocolate and espresso. This is the best porter money can buy. I will be seeking this out again, and very soon.

Draught at the brewery and Parker Pie, 7/24/15
Deep ebony liquid is topped by a tan head that shows moderate retention. Undetermined clarity.
The fresh, plastery, lovely Hill Farmstead yeast/water character is the first thing I notice, even before the roast. The beer just smells alive and vibrant. Light vanilla, dark chocolate and mild coffee notes are all presented very cohesively, with lush, dank, juicy hop notes adding light citrus/wintergreen aspects, but not overdone or dominant. With warming, buttercream, vanilla and milk chocolate emerge, adding more malty depth, but all the while, the roast and hops keep things in balance. Clean, wonderfully balanced and vibrantly aromatic stuff, with no sign of flaw or alcohol.
The flavor displays all of the porter character from the nose, dark chocolate, coffee and vanilla, on an almost silky bed of rich malts. Much like the Mystic The Hum I just had, the flavors are all well-balanced; neither hop or roast bitterness dominates, nor does any gooey chocolate or pale malt sweetness build up. Considerably more dry than The Hum, though, without compromising any texture.
Between this and Cisco Moor Porter, it’s close in my book. Both have the delightful house yeast character and while this is probably a little more flawlessly executed, I did love Cisco’s massive oily, vinous roast/char and cigar notes; it just seemed to have even more complexity than this (though from recent reviews, it looks like Moor Porter is a shell of its former self that I remember (2005/2006)).

Growler from the brewery, 7/13/15
Strong aroma of roasted malts, some burnt notes, and some unsweetened/dark chocolate. The pour is more black than brown with a thick, frothy brown head and heavy lacing. The flavor is similar, but the chocolate comes out more and the roast is more tame. Slightly sweeter than the nose would suggest, with a lightly bitter finish. It feels fairly creamy and smooth with a really nice mouthfeel, soft carbonation, and a somewhat dry close. I think I’m getting more sweetness from this one than I have on the past, but otherwise it just displays as a beautiful, well balanced, highly drinkable Porter.

This is a good medium dark Porter. There is a bunch of flavor in this. I tasted a slight chocolate with a malted hop flavor. It had a nice roasted flavor also and a pleasant after taste. Honestly, this is one of the best porters I have had.. great job.
