COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Farmstead wheat ale aged in oak barrels with satsuma mandarins. Flora is the wine barrel aged version of Florence (1915-1967), our grandfather’s sister as well as the name of our wheat farmhouse ale. In her honor, amidst the fleeting days of summer, we chose to fill French oak wine barrels with Florence and store it away. After many months, a Biere de Table emerged. At the end of a summer day, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Florence.

Bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead wine stem. Pour: Crystal clear pale straw body with two fingers of frothy white head. Great effervescence. The head recedes to a rim, and leaves beautiful, light lacing. Smell: Bright, juicy tangerines, lemon, and zesty oranges. A clean white wine vinousness. Some musty funk, and a touch of oak. Wow. Taste: Acidic and tart tangerine and lemon up front, and that mellows out seamlessly into white wine and smooth oak. Beautiful funk midpalate. Some citrus zest. Through the finish, lightly acidic and tart tangerines, lingering white wine, and drying oak. Mouthfeel: Perfectly carbed. The mandarins added a lovely acidity to play off of Flora’s typical tartness. Refreshing, and supremely drinkable. Flavors linger long enough that this is able to be savored for quite a while. Overall: What can I say… I thought Flora was near perfection, and this bettered it. Well done Shaun, this is a work of brewing art.

Hazy blonde pour with a small head. Barnyard funk, brett, yeast, citrus zest aroma. A lot going on here, lighter citrus fruit, rinds, barnyard funk, musty, oak, white grape. The mandarins are more noticeable while im drinking this. Quite tart. Lighter body, medium carbonation. With every drink i notice something new.

bottle shared by minderbinder, thanks bro - tasted side by side with flora. pours hazy extra pale yellow with a very small white cap, little retention. cheese and lactic notes upfront, subtle mandarine but obvious citrus, winey, bit of dust, citric white grapes, wheat. moderate to low carbonation, light body, light but assertive citric acidity. a certain complexity and enjoyability for sure, but not as much as not-so-regular flora.

Drank side by side with its "plain" cousin. Pours a really really pale yellow with no head and no lacing. Not the best looking beer ever. Aroma is fun, though, with winey, floral, fruity and bretty notes.Taste is citric, tart and really acid overall. No sweetness could be felt. Flavors were mostly made of oranges to me. Carbonation was medium and body was light. This was really, really good but not as good as the regular one.

Bottle 375ml. Pours clear blond with almost no head. Aroma is of citrus, rusticity, yeast, fruits, yogurt, pedio?. Taste is of citrus, yeast, acidity, lambic-like features, but somewhat funkless, mandarins. Palate: Light body. Low carb. Overall: Pretty good, very enjoyable. I prefered the regular Flora, but this one is quite a beer too!

Bottle (375 ml). Shared by Minderbinder, thanks! Hazy yellow with no head and no lacing. Aroma is of mandarins (light to medium) along with cheesy notes, citric acid, lactic presence, brettanomyces and light winey notes. Taste is slightly sweet, there’s more mandarins in the taste along with citris acid, brettanomyces, light winey notes and cheesy notes. Light to medium body. Low carbonation. Citric and dry. Side by side with Flora, I thought that Flora was way better. Don’t get me wrong, this is a really good beer! The mandarins adds a nice fruity/citric part to this beer, but they hide the marvelous winey character from the regular Flora. I would love to try it again sometimes though.

Pours a hazy blondish yellow golden color with two fingers of fizzy white noise. The nose is soft and complex with tingles of citrus, foggy grain and traces of barnyard must. The palate follows with a little bite of acidity and mandarin juice on the front end that falls into the rustic foggy graininess that gives flora its real character. Nice complexities of musty wine barrels and a touch of barnyard funk. Great balance with amazing drinkability !

Notes from Saturday’s tasting. Aroma is very full of Satsuma mandarin character, but still retains a touch of the lactic yogurt character that I found in the original Flora. Hint of wheat and a touch of sweetness from the fruit. Pours a cloudy pale yellow with a faint white head. Not as much retention or lacing as the regular Flora. Flavor, like the aroma is a bit sweeter than the regular Flora. Moderate orange notes with some balanced citrus acidity as well as lactic. Almost no yogurt-like acidity. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency with low alcohol warmth. Overall while I like what the mandarins added in the way of citrus notes and acidity, I feel that the mandarin kind of overshadowed the wheat notes and phenolics that the regular Flora had.
