4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 oteyj (2114) - New Hampshire, USA - OCT 10, 2012
From a 500ml bottle purchased at the brewery. Pitch black pour with a mountainous tan head that prevails throughout the glass. Oatmeal cookie and freshly ground espresso gives way to huge port like vinousness, hints of spicy rye, chocolate brownie, and a very slight hint of alcohol. The palate is thick and rich with caressing pillow effervescence and a dry chocolate-port like finish. An excellent variation of one of my tried and true favorites.

Pour from a bottle into a glass gave a dark brown black color with a nice tan mocha head. Aromas of cocoa, coffee. Medium bodied with perfect mouthfeel. Flavors are immensely complex and delicious. Roasted smoky malt, dark roast coffee, vanilla, oak and in the background the Madeira wine from the barrel. Not overly sweet or sticky and finishes dry enough. Fantastic beer and one of my new favorite stouts!

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2013 Bottle shared at Bruce’s, London during The Stouts Tasting, Pt. II - big thanks to Bruce! Pours oily black with a dense, small brown cap. Some deep, woody notes in the nose, hints of nuts, tangy dark fruits. Medium to big sweet flavor, rich and dry cocoa, burnt wood, light alcohol sting, perhaps some cherries and other tangy dark fruits. Medium to full bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Warming finish, some earthy bitterness, creamy chocolate, burnt wood, earth, baking cocoa. Delicious, balanced, layered. Just lovely.

Bottle shared with Ernesto987. Pours black with large light brown head. Aroma is mellow coffee, milk chocolate, vinous notes, and light cinnamon. Taste is medium sweet with a lightly bitter finish. Flavors are intense and fantastic. Reminds me a bit of maple/brown sugar oatmeal with a subdued coffee element. The finish is very heavy port and spicy rye/oak which does a perfect job of balancing some of the sweetness. WINNER.

The taste is rich roast, intense coffee, sumptuous fruitiness, blackcurrant, red grape, bramble, jam, tanginess, toast, nice bitterness, light ash, some acidity and warming alcohol with a rich, roasty finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and viscous mouth-feel. Rich, good depth of flavour and interesting flavour profile. Pretty delicious.
