Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears black and nearly opaque in the glass with dark plum colored edges and a two finger beige head that slowly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind. Smokey, robust aroma with a nice oak/barrel presence but the spirit has faded quite a bit. Charred oak/toothpick countered by burnt malt, ash and charcoal along with subtle bourbon and presence. Viscous full body with prominent dark roasted malt that lingers throughout. Smokey with charcoal, burnt toast, dark chocolate and oatmeal countered by sweet, luscious dark fruit notes. Nice barrel presence with spicy bourbon, vanilla and oak along with wintery spice and seet chocolate notes. Well balanced and easy to drink with a slightly dry finish.

500 mL bottle. Originally reviewed 8/15/2013. Jet black. Inky with a small mocha head. A few islands and a medium collar. And there’s a ton of bourbon in the nose. Sweet, vanilla bourbon. Coffee comes through behind it all as well as some chocolate. But holy hell it’s a lot of bourbon. Taste is still just a bucket of bourbon. Quite sweet. Deep roasted malts offer a slight counterpoint. The coffee is faint here, but there’s a little bit of acidity from it. Chocolate malts throughout, but it’s always sweet. A bit of smoke in the finish. Thick and sweet. Heavy with medium carbonation. This is nothing like I remember the Madeira version. Nowhere near as harsh. The sweetness can’t possibly be from just the bourbon barrels.

Bottle thanks to PhillyCraft! Pours opaque black, small tan head, dissipates fairly quickly, good lacing. Aroma is bourbon, anise, molasses, cocoa. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter, a bit hot, anise and molasses forward. Medium plus body, hot finish.

A smallish dark beige sheet tops the blackness. Red fruits, vanilla, woody bourbon takes a lot of room in the nose, but without stealing the show completely from the marshmallowy chocolate foundations. As it warms up, more berry-like fruitiness climbs up and complements the rich dark malts and highly toasted cereal base. Chewy, velvety, smoothly carbonated stout with rich maltiness, impressively round for a barrel-aged brew, probably due to the high amount of residual sugars, but then again, it’s not syrupy neither in spite of its vanilla undertones and fudgey inclinations. This is probably due to age - this bottle having been bought at the brewery some 20 months ago - which has subdued the alcohol somewhat, the wheatiness which adds a lightness of spirit adn the all-around fruitiness which brings a vinous component with the softest acidity refreshment and less of a desserty sweetness. A really smooth sipper which has resisted the test of time up to now and impersses by its capacity to post a strong impression while being edgeless all the same.

Bottle: Bourbon edition, bottle date 10-2013. Huge thanks, Alex. Deep, deep brown pour, appears dense & black in the glass. Slow rising, thin & fine-bubbled burnt tan foam settles to a ring quickly. Huge coffee & dense fudge cake aroma. Light undertones of woody bourbon, vanillin, toasted buck wheat, scorched brown sugar, & faint caramel cake. Lovely molten dark chocolate flavor infused with coffee beans, light vanilla, & a robust, warming bourbon essence from front to back. Periphery shows vanilla, wood, brown sugar, cream, & a touch of black licorice. Woody finish with lingering, mouth coating dark chocolate fudge cake & dry coffee beans. A touch of warmth. Fucken delicious.
