A really great beer, the coffee harmonizes well with the bourbon character and yet creates something completely different from a KBS or BCBS, has a weirdly "light" character by comparison, I donít even know. Thanks Colin.

A smallish dark beige sheet tops the blackness. Red fruits, vanilla, woody bourbon takes a lot of room in the nose, but without stealing the show completely from the marshmallowy chocolate foundations. As it warms up, more berry-like fruitiness climbs up and complements the rich dark malts and highly toasted cereal base. Chewy, velvety, smoothly carbonated stout with rich maltiness, impressively round for a barrel-aged brew, probably due to the high amount of residual sugars, but then again, itís not syrupy neither in spite of its vanilla undertones and fudgey inclinations. This is probably due to age - this bottle having been bought at the brewery some 20 months ago - which has subdued the alcohol somewhat, the wheatiness which adds a lightness of spirit adn the all-around fruitiness which brings a vinous component with the softest acidity refreshment and less of a desserty sweetness. A really smooth sipper which has resisted the test of time up to now and impersses by its capacity to post a strong impression while being edgeless all the same.

Bottle: Bourbon edition, bottle date 10-2013. Huge thanks, Alex. Deep, deep brown pour, appears dense & black in the glass. Slow rising, thin & fine-bubbled burnt tan foam settles to a ring quickly. Huge coffee & dense fudge cake aroma. Light undertones of woody bourbon, vanillin, toasted buck wheat, scorched brown sugar, & faint caramel cake. Lovely molten dark chocolate flavor infused with coffee beans, light vanilla, & a robust, warming bourbon essence from front to back. Periphery shows vanilla, wood, brown sugar, cream, & a touch of black licorice. Woody finish with lingering, mouth coating dark chocolate fudge cake & dry coffee beans. A touch of warmth. Fucken delicious.

500 ml bottle dated 6/13. Thanks Dany. Pitch black with a thin mocha color ring. Aroma is dark roasty malt. Taste is bitter euro roast. Unsweetened, licorice, smoke, burnt coffee. Favors are pronounced but still restrained. Taste actually builds after you swallow, bitter coffee comes through. Not much bourbon. Maybe a touch on the back. Super drinkable like every HF beer. A little thin for an imperial stout. Otherwise pretty tasty and unique.

From notes taken during a tasting a couple weeks back. Tasted beside the Madeira version. Aroma has a stronger roast character and less dark fruit, which may be why the roast shows through more. More coffee character, but slightly peppery. Moderate bourbon notes and light alcohol spice and oak. Pours black with a dark mocha head that lingers on the edges. Flavor is similar to the aroma with quite a bit of roast and coffee notes with hints of green pepper and chocolate. Moderate bourbon notes with some alcohol spice and light oak. Moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice beer. I like that there isnít much soy sauce in this bottle, but the roast note has a bit of green pepper character. I miss the red wine notes that the Madeira version had.

Bottle: Thanks Vin: 2013 vintage: Served in a Chouffe glass: Small brown head. Pitch black beer. Aroma has some subtle notes of bourbon, liquorice, fudge, mocha, roast, dried raisin, some caramel. Complex aroma. Subtle aroma. Awesome aroma! Flavours of bourbon, wood, mocha, bitters, marizipan, roast, chocolate, vanilla, toast, caramel, fudge, hint of brownies, Aftertaste is bourbon, wood, vanilla, mocha, fudge, malts and toast. Low carbo, silky mouthfeel, between medium and full close to full bodied and a creamy texture. Complex but smooth and oh so good!
