4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
1 liter growler thanks to the lu. not sure what happened to my rating though but anyhow.... growler opens with a hiss while yielding a turbid dark mahogany brown hued elixir, lighter at the edges, and topped with a two-finger frothy light beige that lingers for a bit but eventually retreating as it settles down... assertive aromatic green citrusy pine hops abundant in the nose with intermingling notes of roasted malt and a softer sense of smoke. solid to say the least.... flavors thrive and remain consistent with the nose. a very balanced and nuanced offering that provides enough of a roasted malt character that graciously melds with its equal hopped up partner. lighter essence of smoked meat exist moreso in the background. medium bodied with adequate level of carbonation. Clean dry finish enhances the experience by small margin one of the last beers of the evening and thoroughly enjoyed, if only by two people. could’ve consumed the entire growler myself. damn you other person for being here.

Pour from a 750 ml. growler revealed a dark black brown beer with a tan mocha like head. Aromas off it were roasted toasted malt and earthy pine needles. Really nice feel on your palate. Blend of flavors was exceptional with coffee, cocoa, and bitter citrusy hops. Grassy earthiness and purity of flavors as well. The finish was long long and extremely good leaning on the dry balanced side. Definitely one of the top IPA’s of this style I have tried.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle shared by Kan! Thanks. Pours a rich blackish brown hue, near opaque with brownish edges, lighter, a frothy beige head dies to a loose bubbly tiny film, light lacing. Aromas are a rich huge blast of citrusy hops, grapefruit envelopes the nose, with lemons, grass, and florals bringing up the rear. Touches of resiny pine. Dry and bitter, very. Some touches of roast, smoke, and toffee, gentle roast, toast, faint cocoa. Nice. Initial is medium bodied offering a heavy handed citrusy hopping with smokey malts, roast and ash, touches of smoked essence, toast, and roast. Mellow sweetness, a blast of hops and smoke play well. Really works well. Top notch AGAIN from the crew at HF.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
My expectations are so high from Hill Farmstead that a 3.8 was actually a bit of a dissapointment. Hugely bitter finish on this one. Relatively fizzy and thin tasting but the hop flavors are very very good and citrusy flavorful. Slight roasted character that could be stronger. Overall a great black IPA.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle split with mcberko. Pours dark brown with a red tint and a bubbly tan head. Aroma of piney hops, orange peel, caramel malts and some citrus in there too. Flavour is bitter, caramel malts, orange peel and lots of hops. Very fresh tasting, bitter, well balanced. Gorgeous!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750mL growler, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany!), pours pitch black with a small tan head and tons of sediment. Aroma is a perfect rich balance between intense hops and roasted malts, with a bit of espresso and piney / resinous hops. Flavour begins intensely roasty and burnt, with beautifully roasted / woody / espresso-y malts, followed by intense piney / resinous hops, leaving a rich roasty and hoppy finish. Little bitterness, as the hops are simply incorporated to expel their flavour without the associated bitterness. Excellent black IPA - one of the best I’ve had.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2013 Growler I picked up from last event, huge bitter bomb. Not much black malt characteristics really. The flavors are delicious but a little one dimensional.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011-11-24. Black body with a small tan head. 4+ Massive hop aroma explodes out of the glass a couple feet away from your glass. Mild, odd roasty undertones. 9+ Flavour is a bit disappointing at first after such a big aroma, roasty dark malt is fairly bitter and don’t entirely work with the hops at first. The hops grow exponentially from the first sips, eventually providing a much more pleasing balance with the roast, at least for my tastes. Lots of fresh leafy green hops. 7+ Smooth average bodied palate is softly carbonated. 3+ Really nice, it took me a while to get into it but it grew on me a lot by the end of the glass. Uber black pour with a vivacious white froth. Monstrous earthy grapefruit, orangepeel, and a beautiful soft roast cocoa nib bitterness that tails off with cream and herbal dankness. Righteous dark chocolate earthen grassy hops in the flavor culminate with citrus resin and caramel hints. Rich palate with a caressing mouthfeel and roast finish. Another epic HFS beer.

On draft at the brewery. Pitch black with a decent white head. Great hop aroma. Fresh piney hop taste. This beer us well made.
