James (1954-1998) is our Uncle; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his four siblings. In his honor, this Black Ale is dutifully crafted from American and German malted barley, American hops, our ale yeast, and water from James’ well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and dry hopped. Roasty and smooth, with accents of chocolate and a balanced hoppy finish, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with James. 6.8% ALC/VOL 16º P Ingredients: Pale and Caramel Malt; Roasted Barley; Centennial and Columbus hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Pours coffee black with a light head and lots of lacing. Aromas of espresso, plums, pine hops. Lots of hop bitterness in the finish. Medium body and med carbonation. A really special brew!

On tap at Blackback Pub in Waterbury VT. Chocolate, roasted almonds, coffee, and light citrusy hops make for a quiet, dark aroma; flavor is somewhat similar, but with a resinous interior that shows the green a little bit more, though still not really very much. The hop qualities in this example seemed very relaxed and even almost hidden to me, and it wasn’t clear if the malts were meant to be the star of if they were drawn to the stage by accident. Their flavor is excellent; lots of chewy chocolate, nougat and nuts, with a smoky haze of roast. That distant hint of resin and citrus rind is enough to keep my senses in this thing. Palate is surprisingly thin, but not too much so; it lands on roasted nuts and chocolate at the end; for me it’s a tasty, strange one.

On tap at Parker Pie Company - West Glover, VT. Bristling pine needle and coffee-like aroma. Bright and vibrant. Flavors were clean and stunning. This seems much darker and heavier than most Black IPAs, but it never gets oily or stout-like, staying fresh and carrying the unique and delicious Carafa and C-hops combo forward. Very nice.

On tap at skinny pancake Poured dark brown to black. In the glass, three finger coffee head with tight bubbles. Faded slowly. Lots of head lacing. Brown edges. Pretty black. Roasted and smoked malts. Hint of campfire and some cocoa tastes. Simcoe and other piney hops. Some tropical fruit tastes. Overall, a pine dominated IPA. Very soft, drinkable, medium body. Fine bitterness at the finish that sticks around.

[4148-20111124] 750mL bottle. Aroma like tennis shoes dipped in hoppy grapefruit orange paint. Black brown body with a long-lasting creamy light tan head and some spotted lacing. Bitter toasted citrus zest hops and roasty grains hops flavour. Full body. All hoppy hops and citrus though. (8/3+/8/4/16) 3.9

My bottle [750ml] shared with HogTownHarry, jerc & mabel -- c/o Glouglouburp. Nov. 2011. Pours a dark ruby-brown, almost black, with an average size semi-lasting frothy beige head. Aroma: Whoa, a hop explosion! Resiny, citrusy and leafy along with roasted malt and a hint of coffee -- smells great! Flavour is predominantly hops followed by roasted malt and a big, long bitter finish. Average bodied. A treat for this hop-lover, I absolutely loved it!

750 growler thanks to Glouglouburp. Big black body with tan head. Nice subdued aroma. Chocolate taste upfront. Pine and hops there as well. But this is really subdued compared to other Black IPAs, such as the recent Stone one. This is really balanced and big and rich on the chocolate. Very nice.

Verre, d’un fût au Farmhouse Tap and Grill. Arômes très invitants de houblon fruité (agrumes, citron, fruits tropicaux). On détecte une légère présence de grains torréfiés. Robe noire, peu de mousse et effervescence moyenne. En bouche, le malt torréfié et céréalier se montre relativement svelte, cédant la place à un beau houblon fruité (surtout des agrumes). Finale relativement sèche présentant une amertume houblonnée d’intensité moyenne. Une très bonne bière, mais tout de même moins exceptionnelle que la plupart des bières de Hill Farmstead.
