COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
James (1954-1998) is our Uncle; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his four siblings. In his honor, this Black Ale is dutifully crafted from American and German malted barley, American hops, our ale yeast, and water from James’ well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and dry hopped. Roasty and smooth, with accents of chocolate and a balanced hoppy finish, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with James. 6.8% ALC/VOL 16º P Ingredients: Pale and Caramel Malt; Roasted Barley; Centennial and Columbus hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Growler shared by ygtbsm94 6/6/10: Pours an opaque dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing beige head. Has a huge fresh resiny piny hoppy nose with some sweet dark caramel and chocolate malts. Starts with good fullness and sweet toasty dark maltiness and fresh resiny flavor hops with nice bitter balance before a crisp, lightly roasty, bittersweet finish. An enjoyable black IPA.

Dark color with a frothy head. Aroma has pungent hops with some roasted malts, pine, and citrus. Well balanced and quite hoppy. Nice solid bitterness and nice full body. Some caramel sweetness balances it out.

Shenandoah Throwdown, growler, thanks peregrinari. Shaun Hill continues to impress. Super roasty and hoppy without too much of either one. Very nice balance--super dank, citrus, light cocoa. Delish.

Shared at Shenendoah National Park be someone. Hops are story here, which caught me off guard. Pours a dark brown. Piny hops dominated the nose. Flavor is a bit sweet with basil, citrus and pine.

Very strong citrus hop character is somewhat floral with biscuit, toasted and chocolatey malt undertones in the aroma. Dull, dark, mahogany brown body is topped by a low, off white head that lasts well. Biscuit and chocolate malt flavours are somewhat overtaken by very strong bitterness that lasts long into the aftertaste along with citrus hop flavours. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Sampled on tap at the brewery.

On tap at Farmhouse in Burlington. First note: this is by no means a porter, and should be re-categorized. Pours very dark, nearly black, with a beautiful, tight light beige head. Aroma is full of hop character, with pine resin, blood orange zest, a touch of grapefruit, and some floral notes. Slight chocolate and caramel malt adds a bit of balance on the nose. Flavor is excellent; very hop driven, more evergreen and citrus hops leading the way. Palate has great bitterness, but still smooth and drinkable. Another great beer from Shaun Hill’s new brewery.

Sampled at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010. Pours a pours a watery, nearly opaque black with a creamy, off white head. Nice hoppy aroma, C hops, lemon zest, pine, resinous hops, pine needles. Flavor is sweet, malty, bitter, lemons, nutty, chocolate. Flavor is like a black and tan made with a great IPA. Full bodied, sweet and a touch bitter through the end. Extremely drinkable.
