Bottle at a bottle share. Pours a very dark, near black color. Nose has just a hint of sourness to it with some grains in there. Taste is much the same, though it feels very heavy, but still remarkably easy to drink.

On tap at the Harvest Festival. Waited until opening a bottle from this release before writing up both.
Dark, near black with a creamy tan head. Nice retention and a large amount of sticky lacing. Extremely hoppy aroma, pine and wood, with light roast that easily overwhelmed. Flavor is similar, a robust, creamy body with light roast and chocolate malt but the pine hops dominate every aspect of the flavor. Very little oak or wine present in this version. A very pleasant dry hopped black IPA, but lacking the complexity of fresh or aged versions in the bottle.

Bottle... Poured near black with a thin, light tan head. Nose had roast with citrus and pine-like hops. Quite balanced. Loads of roasted malts but didn’t seem too sweet. Nice hop flavors but not too bitter. Some other dark fruits flavors. I detected some wood, but I couldn’t totally that it was wine barrel.

Bottle shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike!
A: This black IPA appears well...dark brown. The beige head is about an inch thick and leaves plenty of lacing on the glass.
S: I can tell that this is going to be a good beer. The aroma is a delicate balance of pine, hops, and roasted malt. Very enticing!
T: This beer is excellent. Roasted malt, meet piny hop resin. Absolutely delicious. Hill Farmstead nailed this one!
M: Medium bodied with a present hop bitterness and somewhat of a dry finish.
D: A great example of the style. I would be excited to have this again.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 _angst_ (1745) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - MAY 15, 2012
Bottle @ Mikkeller Bar. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a huge blackish beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing and trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and bitter with dark bread, ripe grapes, coffee, pine, pumpernickel, freshly cut grass, bitter chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Taste is sweet and bitter with coffee, salty liquorice, burnt toast, pine, orange zest, bitter chocolate, dry soil, roasted malts, lemon zest, wood, dark grapes, grapefruit juice and hints of smoke, resin and ash. Mouthfeel is dry, oily bitter and medium to full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with roasted malts, ash, wood, coffee, pine, orange zest and grass. Smooth, balanced and incredibly impressive. One of the best black IPAs I’ve ever tried. Many thanks to the Mikkeller Bar staff who offered me to buy this even if it wasn’t on the menu. I almost turned down the offer due to it being a bigger bottle but I’m very happy I changed my mind.

Immediately amazing. Very dark rosy brown with nice thick tan head. Nose of fresh berries, bubble gum, caramel. Medium body, good carbonation. Taste is oak, dried fruit, cherries. Nice lasting bitter finish. Excellent.

500 ml bottle; dense black pour with thick, dark tan head; sharp citrus and pine aroma mix that has some orange peel, wood/bark; first sip is creamy and heavy on the roast with little hop bitterness; hop heavy aromas is a strange nix of hops and little roast, but hops are faded and drinks with a light, creamy roast; dry, stale chocolate in the finish; the aromas are a little rough for me, but this is damn tasty, roasty goodness with a nice clean, crisp finish; yum

Thanks ramnuts.
Appearance- Black with some brown hightlights around the edges. Tan head and decent lacing.
Smell- Pine tree hop aroma and a small amount of dry Pinot Noir grape aroma.
T- Pine and some coffee flavors. Good bitterness. It finishes with a Chardonay dryness.
M- Good. Style appropriate.
O- An interesting beer to be sure. I am not a big fan of barrel aged IPAs, but this has an interesting twist with the wine barrels. Even though this is a black IPA I would enjoy it in the summer.
