Bottle... Pours pitch black with a mid-sized, creamy, well-tanned head that never fully dissipates. The restrained aroma presents subtle notes of dark chocolate and bong water. Medium-bodied with a raspy mouthfeel and stinging carbonation. The flavor is mostly sweet, furnishing tawny port and dark chocolate. Finishes crisp, sweet and a touch nutty.

500 mL bottle. Unknown original review date. Pours black with a nice mocha head. Excellent retention. Simcoe hops are prevalent on the nose. Some citrusy hops. A touch of vinous notes, but not really a heavy barrel character. Taste is much better than the aroma. Hops first, less simcoe and more centennial-type hops. Good chocolate roast followed by vinous wine barrel. Oaky in the finish. Fascinating combination of flavors. Well carbonated. Maybe too much, really. Not heavy. Lingering bitterness and wine flavors. Really good flavors. Harsh and astringent, but the flavors are great.

Opaque black, frothy brown head. Vinous, grape, chocolate, and tannins. Oxidized bitterness, a little cloying sweetness. Slick, a bit more than medium bodied, mild carb.

From notes. Tasted on 12/12/12 from a capped 22oz bottle with Curtis, and the Nashville crew. Pours very dark brown with a thin tan head that leaves thin, bubbly lace. The nose is malty, roasted, and very hoppy with underlying oaky vanilla with a lightly vinous note. The flavor is very roasted and hoppy, but nicely balanced and easy to drink with the oak rounding everything out nicely. The body is full with light carbonation and a long roasted, hoppy, and vanilla oak finish.

From notes taken firm last week’s tasting. Aroma is surprisingly hoppy, but rather piney, woodsy and grassy. Medium light grapefruit and citrus. Moderate roast notes. Pours dark brown with a thick brown head with good retention. Moderate retention and lacing. Flavor has moderate roast and light chocolate. Moderately strong bitterness with light oak. Moderate grassy hop notes with some woodsy character. Light grapefruit and berry notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, this beer held up better than I expected. Hops are changing but still rather present. Not as much barrel character as I was expecting.

Bottle, generously shared by Al, pours black with medium and lasting beige head. Really sick appearance to this black IPA. Aromas is plums, roast, copper, figs, and dates. flavor is grape juice, malt, bitter hops, licorice, roasted grains, chocolate. Medium bodied with a long lasting finish. Stoked I was able to try this. Got even better as it warmed.

500ml bottle, big thanks to phaleslu for sharing! Dark brown / black color. Thin brown head. Good, thicker lace. Smooth, dry, kind of soft carbonation. Medium to bigger body. Lighter, softer texture. Kind of tart taste... Moderate bitter, good roast malt, light dark chocolate. Very toasty. Kind of tart, sweet taste. OK barrel aged black IPA, a lot of tart, tannic character here that is unwelcome for me. WTF? I’m not really interested in a sour black IPA. Right now... it’s a decent sour black saison, at best. OK beer as it is, but I expected much more from this

500 ml bottle via BA trade. Pours a deep brown with mahogany highlights and a small fizzy brown head. The beer is lighter than Jim but the head is darker. Strange but cool. Aroma of dark fruits and oak, definitely picking up the wine barrel character, along with dark chocolate, florals, citrus fruit, and herbs. Flavor of chocolate, roast, earth, citrus peel, and a deep, underlying vinous character throughout it all. Medium-bodied, with a vinous, mildly bitter, roasty mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Really interesting black IPA. Stil drinking very well.

Bottle thanks to Leighton. Pours black with brown head. Nose and taste of red wine barrel, french oak, roast chocolate, roast vanilla coffee, unsweetened raisins, tangerine peel, piny hops, toasted nuts and light grapefruit. So delicate and beautiful. Medium body. Really takes the style to a whole new level.

Bottle at EBT2 2013. Shared with Mathieu87 and Joris. APPEARANCE: black beer, nice stable beige head. NOSE: vanilla, coffee, some bitterness, little white wine notes, quite boozy. TASTE: vanilla, some hops, wood, some wine. Very good balanced, best Black IPA I ever tasted.

Good tan/brown head over virtually black beer; shards of lace. Chocolate, sweet liquorice, garden herbs and leaves. Stout-like taste, littel impact of the hops; again liquorice & chocolate. Finish yields the barrel-aging, even Bourbon (rather than wine), and a light, refreshing acidity. Rich MF, alleviated by fine CO˛ pearling. Rich for its purpose, barrel aging has done a world of good. Thanks to the kind donator!
