Backlogged review. Tried in ’11 at Matty Capones. Pours a brownish black with small off white head. Little bit of lace in the inner glass. Aromas of roasted malt, smoked meat, cocoa, beech wood. Taste is wood, brown sugar, dark cocoa, and roasted smoked grains. A little bit hoppy. Nice offering from HF but not my style at all.

Clearing out my HF notes. On tap at Capone’s 1/7/11. Pours an opaque near black with a thick mocha head. Nice retention fading to a thick collar and with clumps of lacing. Smokey, mild burnt aroma with balance coming from toast and chocolate malt. Thick, chewy body with a dry, ashy finish. Dark chocolate, licorice, roast malt, tobacco and faint dark fruit balance out the intense bbq and smoke of the flavor. Smoke in a glass? yes, but more complexity than typical for this style.

Growler at a ChrisO tasting, London. Pours rich, dark brown with a creamy, beige head. Moderate smoked malt aroma, brown bread, toasty sugars. Medium sweet flavor with rich, dark bread, sturdy smoke, subtle burnt sugars, dirt. Medium bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Sweet finish with mild brown sugar, dark bread, restrained smoke, toasty sugars. Fantastic balance throughout. World-class stuff.

Draught. Dark opque brown, no head and syrupy legs. The aroma is smoke, burnt toast lighly buttered, and a slight funk. The flavor is moderately sweet, goes to wood, smoke and ends moderately bitter. It’s velvety in the mouth at first then gets gritty. The body has a good weight to it. Really nice.

Aroma is chocolate, smoked malts, some coffee, spice, and bread. Brown pour, tan head with good retention and spotty lacing. Smoke flavors up front, followed by caramel, chocolate, and hints of roast. Medium bitterness, slightly sweet. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Nice.

Draft at railroad. Pours hazy mahogany with nearly no head to speak of. The aroma is sweet, mesquite, and smoky. The taste is nice and smoky without being overpowering. There is a bit of a dryness on the finish. Not HF’s best but good.

750mL growler, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany), pours a deep dark mahogany / brown with a small beige head. Aroma is moderately smoky, light roasted malt, toasted nuts and caramel. Flavour is very subtly smoky, with loads of roasted caramel malt, some brown sugar without being very sweet. Not intensely smoky, but intensely flavourful more so from the roasted and caramel malt presence. Very well-rounded. Most excellent – one of the best smoked beers I’ve ever had.

Pint shared two ways at Black Back.
Appearance : Dark brown with small foamy brown head.
Aroma : Smooth caramel with toffee. Light raisins. Velvety and smooth.
Taste : Caramel with light chocolate and light coffee. Very rich with well balanced.Creamy smooth finish with raisins, smoke and toffee.
Overall : Quite interesting beer. Great smooth and silky malt profile. Nice complex smoke and raisins notes. Fairly well balanced and measured profile. Very cohesive and complex. I’d be happy to be able to sample this one more time. I feel like I haven’t been able to capture all it’s complexity with my notes.

The ChrisO small midweek tasting. Thanks Leighton for this rare treat. Clear dark red - amber beer. Little pale tan head. Light soft palate. Smooth sweetish malts with mellow smoke and a little mild citrus. Hands together well.
