4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle:   Pitch black pour, moderate brown head, foamy, nice lacing.   Rich graham cracker nose, sweet roasted malts, bourbon, a touch of tart dark pitted fruit.   Not only looks great, smells great too!   Rich on the tongue, roasty, sweet, graham cracker, bourbon, a bit woody, with a touch of tart and over ripened dark pitted fruit.   Smooth and rich on the tongue.   Super clean, lingering chocolate and cocoa notes.   A bit more tartness picks up as it warms.   Good Stout and Porter combo.   Thanks chouffe for this treat!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
A beautiful dense, small-bubbled, tight tan head resides above the pure blackness. And it stays there stubbornly. Fairly complex aroma where the lead player may very well be the alcohol with its sugary undertones backed by an ample supply of maple and even honeyed mocha - the roastiness being toned down by the elegant oak which transpires a little vanilla, but mostly toast and perhaps even a little smoke back there which I assume stems from the barrel. In mouth, the strong alcohol presence boosts the sweetness level up a notch or two, making for a sweet ensemble, a milk chocolate liquor which fortunately manages to reach out and hint at a berry or two and some nice dark fruit notes peek up in the second half, contributing along with the roasted malts to provide a softly acidic character that does not quite tame down the alcoholic sweetness, but certainly helps. The good thing about that sugar is that it comes with an extraordinary body. Think Expedition Stout in terms of fullness, not viscous or sticky partly thanks to appropriate albeit background hops, but just plain unfiltered, dextrinous, dense, smooth and soft textured high gravity stout. Its strongest point. In the end, it’s not really my type of thing and what I find absolutely extraordinary with HF beers - they surf on freshness - is not highlighted as much in a dark and liquorous ale, but there’s no denying the high quality standards at stake here.
