The first in our series of experimental Imperial IPAs – Release #1 is brewed exclusively with Cascade hops (from Segal Ranch) and Weyermann Vienna Malt. Our friend, Jeff O’Neil (the artist formerly known as the head brewer at Ithaca Beer Company… now redesigning the Peekskill Brewery) lent us a hand on this, our very first and long brew day on our 15bbl brewhouse. 8% abv.

Growler. Pours murky yellow with a thin white head that lingers. Piney hop aroma over mild carbonation. Tasty but not as complex as you'd expect from hill. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at the brewery (which has an amazing new tasting room). Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of strong cascade hops with some pine and light citrus, pale malts, and the cleanness of all HF beers. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Light HF texture. A great beer for an entirely Cascade hopped beer, but still not my favorite hop.

750 mL growler. Originally reviewed 4/15/2013. Hazy without much head. The thinnest of collars. A few loney islands. Smell has lots of grapefruit hops. Very citrusy. A little bit of sweetness. Taste is grapefruit and a bit of creaminess. Less intensely hoppy. Grainy hops. Low bitterness. The creaminess is a little odd, but not off putting. Very drinkable. Low carbonation. Straightforward but very good. Less impressive than the other Society & Solitude variants.

Pour is a little darker than the standard hf ipa. Medium amber with the standard heavy haze and a tight white head. Nose has an assertive spice, oily hop, notes of citrus, moderate earthiness malt balance. Taste has a fair bit of the grain bill right up front, earthy malt, citrus comes in and gets a touch oily in the hop flavor. Spice lingers around the finish. Citrus and a hint of floral hop give an added punch as it warms. Body is light, really soft feel, moderate carb, dry but still a long finish.

Growler, consumed on day of purchase, split two ways. Pale gold pour with tenacious lacy white head, light haze. Aroma is very grassy, light citrus, grapefruit, light flour-y malt notes. Taste is quite bitter, nice hoppy bitterness, dry grassy hop notes. Palate is med bodied, good carbonation, nice and dry. Good, but not my favorite from this series.

From notes. Enjoyed at the hotel for a tasting after Great Taste on August 08. HF growler thanks to Al. The pour is a foggy straw yellow color with a medium sized white head and some spectacular lace. The aroma is really good. There are some awesome dank tropical fruits, a good pine resin, and I’m picking up mango specifically. The flavors are a little lighter. It’s really dank still, and the tropical fruits fade off a tough in lieu of the resin bitterness. The mouth feel is creamy, but light and the carbonation is a little over done in my opinion, but the beer balances well, and I didn’t like this one as much as S&S #5. Oh well.

FINALLY, got the missing society and solitude beer. On tap at Armsbby Abbey. Strong hoppy aroma with uncharacteristically strong sweetness in this one. The booze is also semi-evident. Was it an old keg? I hope not. Either way, delicious. Strong pine flavors, stron hoppy piney aroma, finish is sweet and thick. Thick mouthfeel.

On tap at Armsby Abbey in Worcester. Served in a snifter. A deep golden brew with plenty of classic grapefruit citrus notes. Dances on the palate. Very nice!
