From the tank at the brewery. Pours dark brown to black with a small and tan head. Aroma is coffee, toffee caramelish, roasted malt and quite clear vanilla notes - more vanilla than its Danish twin brew from Fanø. Smooth dark roasted to toffee sweet malty flavoured. Light sweetness mixed with a distinct vanilla presence. Smooth roasted malty and bitter finish. Lingering toffee, chocolate, coffee and smooth yet declining vanilla.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to Leighton who always comes up with the Hill Farmstead treats! Opaque black - brown beer, good tan head. Palate is airy and a little soft. Fairly dry. Mellow dark malts, just a touch of roast and coffee. Mild roast bitterness develops but is offsett by vanilla and a trace of wood. Dry and mildly bitter finish. Not the smoothest of Hill Farmstead beers but pretty drinkable.

on tap-pours black with a tight brown head. Aroma is dark malt-cocoa. Taste is sweet dark malt-cocoa with some bite, vanilla, some earthy hops. Full body, chewy.

Completely black, thick brown head, moderate retention. Aroma of seven layer death-by-chocolate cake. Taste is espresso poured over an Italian tartuffo dessert. Medium body. Very nice.

Bottle shared by b3shine. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Moderate toasted chocolate malt and small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted malt sweet flavor with a medium complex dark malt sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Solid complex brew.

Black pour with a tan head. Big roasted malt and vanilla aromas. Plenty of coffee, a bit of ash, dark chocolate, and a little bit of spice. The flavor is quite roasty and a little bit bitter. Tons of vanilla, a mild molasses sweetness, and big coffee. Dark chocolate, a bit of ash, and some spice.

Keg at The Pony Bar, NYC. Pours oily brown with a creamy, tan head. Big coffee aroma with subtle roasted malt notes. Hints of cinnamon do poke through. Medium sweet flavor with moderate roast, roasty mocha, slight earth. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a rather silky feel. Roasty finish, some burnt cocoa and burnt earth, mild bitterness, light cinnamon spiciness. Lingering cocoa with a lasting chocolate-cinnamon mix flavor. I have used the old chocolate/cinnamon combination for years in oatmeal and smoothies, and I can tell you this is almost exactly the way it tastes. As I finish, Levon Helm’s rendition of Tennessee Jed comes on. Great beer overall, enjoyed in the best beer bar in NYC.

500 ml bottle shared by Forgetfu (thanks Bill!) poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, light earthiness and light cinnamon. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of milk chocolate, vanilla, coffee and light cinnamon with a smooth lingering chocolate finish.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2013 Bottle... Pours dark brown with an insignificant head that quickly dissipates. The luxuriant bouquet offers a swirl of mocha, fudge, toasted nuts, vanilla and a nuance of lightly smoked malt. Barely medium-bodied with a thin mouthfeel and vibrant carbonation. The flavor is a mélange of sweet mocha, fudge and mild, tannic bitterness that is buffered by a delicate note of vanilla. Finishes mildly bitter and roasty. Unfortunately, I picked up no cinnamon in the aroma or the flavor. Another Hill Farmstead beer that would have been better with more viscosity. If this brewer ever discovers how to properly work with thickening grains and/or sugars, his malty beers will be dangerous. He seems to have everything else nailed down. Bottle courtesy of newcigarz!

Thanks Ernesto! Nice dark brown pour with a wonderful tan head. Aroma is a nice mix of some roast, coffee, very light vanilla and a hitn of hops. Flavor has nice coffee and vanilla overtones, but this beer is far from sweet or cloying. Instead you get some nice bitterness from the roast and hops. Incredibly well balanced and delcious as hell!
