Hinterland Bourbon Barrel IPA

Poured a reddish brown color with a nice-sized head. Aroma is rich, sugary, heavy bourbon, and rich caramel notes. Taste is much of the same; very rich and chewy. I think it was too much bourbon and wood flavors, and not enough hops and bitterness shone through.

On tap at Hinterland – Milwaukee. Poured a brilliant garnety-red with a light ring and a swirly beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, lovely bourbon and vanilla-accented caramel and grapefruit sweetness.. remarkably soft and calculating, with the barrel seamlessly-integrated with the nice underlying beer. The flavor found sweet, strong (but not oppressive) bourbon sugars, drawn caramel, and grapefruit at the base with vanilla-accented grapefruit bitterness on the edges.. tangy bourbon sugars and some orange zest emerge for the finish.. tasty! Medium-bodied with low carbonation.. a bit of a grainy oak theme.. nicely toasted. Good stuff!
