On tap @ Sugar Maple. Pours black with a small creamy tan head. Oh man, aroma is excellent, vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, coffee and some coconut. Flavor is a bit on the sweet side but so good, same flavor as the aroma with lots of bourbon characteristics blended with sweet chocolate and toffee. Full body with soft carbonation and a lush, rich mouth feel. Really nice beer, it drinks like a bigger beer, so rich and good.

Had this at their brewpub in Green Bay. Very bourbony and highly alcoholic. Tasty enough, but expected more.

On tap at Sugar Maple. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is rich and dark with coffee, oak, mild bourbon, chocolate and vanilla. Taste has less of the barrel than I’d expect, but still was a solid offering. Coffee, light oak, chocolate, alcohol and light bourbon with a roasty finish.

On tap at Old Fashioned in Madison, pours black with a thin tan head, the aroma is full of chocolate, vanilla and a hint of bourbon, the flavor mixes all the chocolate, bourbon and vanilla together very well, there is a slight bourbon kick in the finish, amazing this beer tastes like this and has this low of an ABV.

Pours pitch black with a medium mocha head and little lacing. Aroma is intense bourbon, vanilla beans, oak, and some chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is much the same, with some alcohol warming and intense bourbon and vanilla.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2008 On tap at Hinterland. I was anxious in tasting this but man, was it worth the wait. Appearance is a deep rich brown color with medium mocha head. Aroma is of intense bourbon with vanilla, charred oak, marshmallow and chocolate. Taste is upfront with bourbon which allows the roasted malt, chocolate and coffee to follow. This is a full bodied brew that feels like an Imperial Stout without all the weight of the alcohol. Excellent.

Many thanks to David for picking up the growler! Poured a ruby-tinted deep brown with a short cap of medium beige head. The aroma picked up lots of sweet bourbon, dark chocolates, and a touch of coffee.. quite roasty overall.. sweet and enticing. The flavor found deep-roasted dark chocolate and espresso along with charred oak.. espresso bitterness and sweet bourbon accents kiss the edges.. lots more chocolate, toasty oak, and bourbon on the finish.. tasty! About medium-bodied on the palate, grainy, and very roasty.. well-balanced. This was a great example of integrating bourbon barrels with a less-than-imperial stout.

Thanks Dave for acquiring this growler. The beer pours to a black body with a bubbly light gray-khaki head. The aroma is light wood char, chocolate ganache, marshmallows, subtle oak, chocolate volcano cake, nice coffee. The flavor is charred marshmallows, light coffee, light notes of bourbon, and light charred wood. The palate is medium bodied, carbonated, and acetic a little bit.

On draught at the brewpub in Green Bay, Wisconsin as "Hinterland Bourbon Barrel Stout." Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a creamy tan head that quickly dissolves to a film with some spotty lacing. Aroma of tasted dark malt, dark chocolate with some coffee, licorice and a touch of vanilla. Taste is where I detected some of the bourbon barrel aging but very lightly. Character is full bodied, very light carbonation with a dark chocolate flavor. Finish is smooth, creamy with some dark chocolate and bourbon flavors. A decent sipping brew.
