3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Onenote81 (1002) - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA - APR 25, 2012Originally reviewed: 10/20/10. Shared with my wife, poured my allotment into a conical pint. She’s a sucker for coffee-beers, as am I. Pours a very dark chocolate brown. I wouldn’t call this black, but it’s close. A finger-width tan head rests atop after the pour, and sticks around a good bit. Excellent sip rings left behind, marking each and every delicious gulp. The nose is filled with fresh ground coffee, chocolate notes, earthy roots, marshmallow, and a slight fruity twang on the finish. Nice.
The flavor captures some of the coffee presence, but it’s not as big and bold as I expected and wanted. Rather, I’m getting lots of roasted malts, some bitter dark chocolate, mild hop presence, and the finish, here as well, is slightly sour and fruity. The tangy finish is a little off-putting, but not enough to keep me from wanting more. This was an easy gulper on this cool evening. The mouth was on the spritzy side as well. I’d not mind if this was a little more smooth on the edges.

Pours a translucent brownish black on tap with fluffy off-white head and moderate lacing. Aroma of straight coffee and chocolate. Taste follows, really thin on the mouth. Not that awesome.

Jacksonville, Fl - Grassroots Natural Market - pint bottle. Pours a thick viscous oily black with a sticky khaki colored head that leaves a nice coat of lacing. Aroma has some earthy accents with some freshly tilled dirt, a touch of coffee. Flavor has a nice roasted profile to it with some light chocolate accents, a bit of potting soil and some day old percolated coffee. Mouthfeel has a decent rich thickness to it. Pretty solid.

Draft at Dewey’s-Clifton, served in a pint glass. Pours a deep, mostly opaque coffee brown with a small tan head. The aroma has a nice dose of cofffee and roasted malts, dark chocolate, and earth. The flavor starts with bitter dark chocolate, earthy hops, and then transitions more into the roasty, toasty coffee notes. Light-medium bodied, with a bitter then roasty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Really surprised by the bitterness in this. Must have been super fresh because the hops were very much on display. I loved the roasty coffee finish. Good beer.

Pours stark black with a lot of dark tan head that rapidly dissipates. Very strong nose of coffee and burnt toast. Surprisingly soft taste, chocolate and coffee with a mild aftertaste. Pretty good, but light tasting stout.

Pours a black with a big and foamy beige head. Aroma is coffee and more coffee with a little bit of chocolate. The taste is pretty much the same. It is very bitter. Although it seems to take the bitterness a little bit to far in my opinion. Light in body, with a thin and oily texture. Lacking in carbonation. This one is pretty simple and straightforward. I like this style and I could drink them all day. But saying that, I usually expect more from these.

On nitro @ Oblivion Taproom. The body was a clean brown, while the head looked like melted ice cream. It smelled like coffee, light hops and more roasted malts. It was incredibly smooth and creamy, like coffee indeed with a touch of dark chocolate. I should have gotten MORE of this stuff.
