4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a very dark, dark brown with khaki colored head, viscous as well, nice body. Raw dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted malt on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a bit of char, maybe overroasted malt, but not in a bad way.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Breeze Thru. Pours black with light reddish tints and a brown head leaving some spotty lacing. Aroma has chocolate, caramel, light cherry and caramel with a touch of espresso. Somewhat similar nose to Speedway. Taste is of light chocolate, cocoa, some caramel with a touch of earth. Medium bodied, and thinner than expected from the bigger nose. Finishes somewhat bitter with cocoa sweetness. Very nice nose did not have follow through. 13.4

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle into Le Duvel - produced huge head right away - so much so that I had to take in as much as I could to prevent it from spilling over all over the place. I was successful in that attempt and detected strong roasty coffee grind flavors. That was a rush, literally. Now that I have time to type...
Expectation: this brewery has been hit or miss and has provided a few huge head beers.
Hardware: see above
Nose: heady. roast and that aroma I usually get with old beers that are overcarbonated (especially Ohioís Cardinal).
Sip: honestly the head tastes better than the actual beer. Slight milk chocolate but faint.
taste: dark chocolate bitterness
Misc: not that boozy
Conclusion: a good beer, but not a stellar impy stout.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle, I think itís about a year or so old if not older. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with a half inch tan head. Thereís a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like roasted malt, coffee, milk and bittersweet chocolate, and some anise. It tastes like roasted/charred malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, anise, caramel and some light citrusy/piney hops. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís a bit slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. I kept meaning to buy this when fresher, but I guess I just kept passing it by until I noticed it went on sale. I have liked the other Hinterland brews Iíve tried in the past, and this one is good too. I think this one ages well! Bought on closeout for $5.99 a 4-pack.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours an opaque black body under a large frothy brown head that slowly receded. The nose is big and bold with lots of roast and espresso along with a slight citrusy note. Just a bit of alcohol, fairly minimal for such a big beer. The flavor is a little too heavy on the burnt malt, but itís pretty decent. Some slight sweetness, lots of espresso-roast coffee, moderate alcohol, lingering burnt caramel. Pretty decent Imperial Stout, not the best as far as depth or subtlety goes, but itís enjoyable. Full bodied and quite chewy with just a bit of stickiness. Not one Iíd buy again, but a decent experience.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JAN 15, 2015 Pours nearly black with a medium dark tan head. Head dissipates fairly quickly with minimal lacing. Aroma is toasted malt and black licorice with a touch of booze at the end. Taste is burnt toast, dark chocolate, and even just a a bit nutty. Reasonably dry finish. Good mouth feel throughout. Personally I prefer the Luna Coffee Stout but this is also very good. - edit, January, 2015. Recent batches of the Imperial are now neck and neck with the Hinterland Luna Coffee Stout.
