Lunatic, go ahead howl at the moon. After tasting this delicious beer, you may have no choice in the matter. We brew Hinterland Lunatic to draw out that instinctual yearning to go against the grain, to take a chance, and to experience something totally whacked. Lunatic defines what getting crazy in the brewhouse is all about. This beer blends together copious amounts of Flaked Oats, 2 row, Vienna, Chocolate and Roasted Barley malts along with Columbus hops in order to create the ultimate Imperial Stout.

12 oz. Deep ebony with an enduring half inch of spongy foam. Nose is cocoa, espresso with a dab of cream, plus touches of soy and blackberry. Tastes of dark toasted whole grain bread, espresso, soy, blackberry and dark chocolate. Heavy body has a medium carbonation that remains mostly smooth and helps carry the big body. Leans to the sweet side but is a pretty drinkable dessert beer.

pours pitch black with a smallish but dense ruby brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, earthy. Creamy mouth feel. Taste is rich. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, burnt toast, black coffee. Bitter linger on the palate. The 9.5% alcohol is present, but muted by the robustness of the brew. Good beer!

This is a very good imperial stout! I find that it lacks the complexity of some others that I've tried but it makes up for it with a pure delicious taste and a smooth drinkability that rivals some of the best. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a very dark, dark brown with khaki colored head, viscous as well, nice body. Raw dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted malt on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a bit of char, maybe overroasted malt, but not in a bad way.

Bottle from Breeze Thru. Pours black with light reddish tints and a brown head leaving some spotty lacing. Aroma has chocolate, caramel, light cherry and caramel with a touch of espresso. Somewhat similar nose to Speedway. Taste is of light chocolate, cocoa, some caramel with a touch of earth. Medium bodied, and thinner than expected from the bigger nose. Finishes somewhat bitter with cocoa sweetness. Very nice nose did not have follow through. 13.4

12oz bottle into Le Duvel - produced huge head right away - so much so that I had to take in as much as I could to prevent it from spilling over all over the place. I was successful in that attempt and detected strong roasty coffee grind flavors. That was a rush, literally. Now that I have time to type...
Expectation: this brewery has been hit or miss and has provided a few huge head beers.
Hardware: see above
Nose: heady. roast and that aroma I usually get with old beers that are overcarbonated (especially Ohioís Cardinal).
Sip: honestly the head tastes better than the actual beer. Slight milk chocolate but faint.
taste: dark chocolate bitterness
Misc: not that boozy
Conclusion: a good beer, but not a stellar impy stout.

12 ounce bottle, I think itís about a year or so old if not older. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with a half inch tan head. Thereís a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like roasted malt, coffee, milk and bittersweet chocolate, and some anise. It tastes like roasted/charred malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, anise, caramel and some light citrusy/piney hops. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís a bit slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. I kept meaning to buy this when fresher, but I guess I just kept passing it by until I noticed it went on sale. I have liked the other Hinterland brews Iíve tried in the past, and this one is good too. I think this one ages well! Bought on closeout for $5.99 a 4-pack.
