3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ughsmash (6670) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 1, 2011
Bottled. Poured rich coppery amber with very little going on for head.. lovely color, though. The aroma picked up sweet maple, molasses, and nutty notes, joined by, well, more maple.. sweet overall and enticing. The flavor was actually driven by drawn caramel, with sweet maple, vanilla, and maple/metallic tartness around.. sweet, a bit sticky, and tangy on the finish.. didn’t like the way it ended. Light-medium bodied and much sharper than it needed to be on the palate.. OK beer overall, but not one of my favorites from Hinterland.

Served on draught at the Wisconsin Micro-brewers Beerfest in Chilton, Wisconsin. Pours a clear dark caramel brew with a thick and creamy off-white head that has some good retention and some spotty lacing. Aroma of sweet dark malt, brown sugar, toffee and a hint of maple syrup. Taste is medium to full bodied and some light carbonation with flavors of sweet roasted caramel malt, maple syrup, light chocolate, toffee and a touch of raisin. Finish is semi-sweet, creamy texture and a sweet and toasted malt aftertaste that lingers around after the finish. I remember having this back in the mid 1990s when Hinterland was brewing in a small warehouse in Denmark, Wisconsin. Their Maple Bock today is just as smooth and creamy as I remembered nearly ten years ago.

Bottle. Deep brown with traces of a khaki head. A nice caramel and wood nose. Just light hints of maple. There is almost a strong black tea quality in the aroma. A lot of the maple character comes through in the aftertaste. Each drink is largely caramel with a banana hint. There is also some tobacco.
