Dark red-orange, beige head. Aroma is nicely smoky, caramel, sausages, smoked bacon. Taste is more smoke, meats, caramel. The meaty smoke doesn’t seem akin to the peat smoke I’ve come to expect, nevertheless, this beer was awesome.

Enjoyed during a closed door tasting session in Green Bay with the brewer, Joe Karls. Poured a amber/brown with a modest, off white head and spots of lacing. The aroma was some light, malty sweetness, light roast, and subtle smoke and wood. The flavor exposed some caramel that was probably masked by the smoke in the nose, and low hop bitterness. Midway between a light and heavy Scottish in body and very flavorful.

On tap at Hinterland. Pours a dark rusty brown with thin off white head. Aroma is peat malt and caramel and toffee. Taste and aroma are intense peat malt, light smoke, rich toffee with a sweet fruit finish. Moderate carbonation. Easily drinkable but a real firm backbone and flavor profile.

On draught at the HInterland brewpub in downtown Green Bay, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-clear reddish amber brew with an average sized off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of caramel malt, a hint of vanilla, some toffee and some lightly smoked wood. Taste is medium bodied, a little sweet with flavors of lightly smoked caramel malt, toffee and a hint of grapefruit. Finish is semi-sweet, very little bitterness and a light caramel/toffee aftertaste.

On tap at Hinterland – Milwaukee. Poured a brilliant garnety-red with a light ring and a swirly beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, lovely bourbon and vanilla-accented caramel and grapefruit sweetness.. remarkably soft and calculating, with the barrel seamlessly-integrated with the nice underlying beer. The flavor found sweet, strong (but not oppressive) bourbon sugars, drawn caramel, and grapefruit at the base with vanilla-accented grapefruit bitterness on the edges.. tangy bourbon sugars and some orange zest emerge for the finish.. tasty! Medium-bodied with low carbonation.. a bit of a grainy oak theme.. nicely toasted. Good stuff!
