Originally reviewed: 10/17/10. Bottle split with my wife. Poured my allotment into a giant mug. Pours a slightly hazy dark amber/orange with a thick, foamy, white head on top. Retained fair enough; left no lace behind. Scents of grains, sweet caramel, brown sugar.
Great mellow smoothness in the body. Perfect heft for this style. Superb balance in flavor, as the sweetness comes forward, but not cloyingly. Mild bitterness with just the right amount of hop presence. Finish was bready and warming. Absolute splendid Festbier. My favorite of the year, and maybe my favorite O’fest over all. Kickin’ good beer.

50cl bottle: Pours a clear deep orange amber with a spotty-lacing white head. Has a sweet, lightly toasted pale malty nose with some noble hoppy notes and a touch of graininess. Starts with pretty good fullness and fine carbonation with a light caramel sweetness and some biscuity notes with a grassy noble hop bitterness before a drier, crisp finish. True to style and quite drinkable.

I left it out of the cooler for a bit first. Poured with a smallish, cream colored head that soon settle to a small island, a broken ring, and no lace. Color is a clear red orange amber with a bubble trail. Aroma is malt, fruit, hop, caramel. Flavor is much the same as nose with hops and sweetness standling out with a little tang. Body and carbonation are ok. Finish is like flavor, a little on the short side, and a hint of alcohol.

Shaker pint draft at Nessun Dorma in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Pour is a clear golden copper with a smallish frothy white head. Aroma is cracker bread malt, sweet caramel and an light floral hoppiness in the back. Fresh and clean nose. The taste starts with the caramel sweetness, turning to soft bready malt and finishing with the bright floral hoppiness. Flavors are straight forward, bright and clean. Palate is thin to medium bodied, slightly lower carbonation and the clean dry finish. Very drinkable beer, nice one.

16 oz bottle from Binny’s downtown Chicago. smooth caramel lager appearance and aroma with a hint of european hops - not so "highly hopped" as the description but nicely balanced. more of a typical dunkel/vienna than an octoberfest beer, but it’s quite appropriate for the season. medium-to-full body and balanced with a nice smooth finish. very enjoyable.

Pours a clear copper with thin white head. Aroma is mostly malty with some caramel notes coming through as well as some spice. Taste is malty up front with more caramel and roasty notes. A bit of hoppyness comes through on the end with a slightly bitter finish. Good mouthfeel. Overall an enjoyable, sessionable Marzen.
