3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Guerde (992) - St. Paul, USA - JAN 9, 2011
(bottle) Jet black pour with a large dark tan head that retains very well and leaves good lacing. If there’s one thing Hinterland can do, it can make a beer look nice in a glass. Aroma is good too, with the juniper making a strong impression which serves to cut through the roast and chocolate smells which creates a nice effect for the olfactory. Coffee is present as well, but I believe this is more of a byproduct of the malts used, and it smells far better than the Luna that had coffee added. Bears a resemblance to GD Yeti. Flavor is also well done, with plenty of roasted malt, dark roasted coffee, chocolate, and the juniper showing up on the tail end of things to accompany the hop bitterness. Some semblance of dark fruit here, but hard pressed to define what it is specifically. Could be chocolate-covered raisin. Mouthfeel is light/medium, and carbonation is good. Overall, this beer is a substantial improvement over the Luna Coffee Stout, and it’s one I’d definitely drink again. Well done Hinterland.

Originally reviewed: 2/9/11. Bottle poured into a standard conical pint glass. This is one of the darkest Porters I’ve ever poured. Utter blackness like dirty motor oil. Very viscous as well. A small mocha head tops it off. Lots of lacy webbing on the glass. The nose starts sweet with notes of creamy milk chocolate, more dairy, and finishes roasted with hints of espresso and ground coffee beans.
The heavy look carries over to the feel. Moderate chew to this one. Carbonation is in the background, just bubbly enough. Hefty beer. I’m not sure exactly if I have much experience picking out juniper flavor, but this beer says that it is brewed with juniper berries. There is an almost bittersweet twang on the back end of this one, that I can only guess is juniper berry (?). Otherwise this beer is all roasted, almost to a fault. The heavy char and roasted qualities wear on me over the course, and I find the drinkability hindered. I thought there would be a bit more sweetness balancing this one out, but I find it lacking. It’s a good beer anyways. Away from the norm a tad, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
