Draught at the brewery. Browny red/dark amber colour with off-white head. Aroma spicy and roasted, but like Hojicha, red roasted tea. Also quite hoppy bitterness, pine, resinous, b.o. Very prickly in the mouth and a very bitter finish.

Bottle (gift from Neko-chan). Mostly yeast, with a bit of chocolate, in the nose. Dark copper w/ a full inch of rocky head. Dark malt flavors, some roastiness, some yeast, and a pleasant moderately bitter aftertaste. Clean, smooth medium body. Well balanced and very drinkable.

33cl bb04/2016, konichidiosynkrasie for the excellent extrae. - Luminous auburn pour, luxurious polished furniture. Suave honeyed Maris Otter, tea-dunked madeleine. More black tealeaf bitterness in taste, getting more resinous plus sweet like candied orange pith. Love the cushioned sweet malt profile here against the UK style hop aromatics, with an almost, yes, umami savouriness coming in. Assertive lingering bitterness rounding off this intensely enjoyable Nippon-ESB with an austere bite.

Bottle at the RB Rochester Gathering, Sept. 09. Thanks, KyotoLefty! Unfiltered light brown with reddish highlights. Sweet, caramel, dryness in the finish, nice sweet sticky mouthfeel, especially as it warms.
