This Nipponia is brewed using two Japanese original materials; "Kaneko Golden," the Japanese ancient barley, and "Sorachi Ace," the hop which once was bred in Japan. Please enjoy the citrus flavor, the golden color and the complex taste.

Important!: This is the original top-fermented version. From summer 2011, Nipponia has been bottom fermented. See that entry.

Wow! A great golden ale. Aroma was so so. Light pilsner malt and a slight graininess. Pour was a nice semi-cloudy light gold with a one finger white head and plenty of tiny rising bubbles. Taste was very refreshing and delicious. Light pilsner malt with a slight ginger undertone. Sweet sugary and dry aftertaste. Another great beer from Japan!

Bottle shared by Turdferguson at BASC - thanks, Sam! Fairly vibrant gold pour, with a decent amount of sediment visible. Strong notes of tropical fruit in the nose, along with that mildly spicy character the Sorachi imparts. Crisp carbonation in the mouthfeel, slight heat and tang on the prickly finish. Dry and citric, with enough malts for balance. Enjoyable but certainly not in the top rank.

550 ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazed gold with a moderate linen white head that lasted through the first third of the glass and left a layer of foam with each sip. Pleasant aroma of malt, honey, and just a hint of orange. The flavor is malt with a bit of biscuit, honey and orange with a nice crisp finish. This is not a style that I am particularly fond of, but I have to say I was very impressed with this beer.

Draft at Redlight Redlight. Pours a very cloudy, glowing, bright orange amber color. A small, smooth, beige-tinted blanket sits at the head, giving solid, sheety rings of lacing to the glass. Aromas are very fruity, suggesting notes of golden raisin, juicy orange, nectarine, and oily citrus peel. Blonde candy and honeyed cereal malts provide the backdrop for the citrus-driven hops to shine. Prominent yeast suggests of bread dough, bringing things together nicely. Flavors largely follow suit, showing hints of burnt honey and general golden fruit, as Belgian-esque yeast gives notes of bread dough, and bright, lemony, orangey hops lend juicy bitterness. Balance is quite nice throughout. On the palate, a medium-plus body is smoothed by substantive, creamy yeast, while soft carbonation leads into a slightly drying, somewhat alcoholic finish. Good, unique brew overall. The price tag is definitely a little overzealous, but it’s an interesting brew nonetheless.

550ml bottle. Opened with a overflowing fizz. Pours 24K gold, white thin foam. Nice lace. Aroma of honey and malts. Soft clemetine meat. Flavor of bitter citrus, pine bark bitterness, sweet biscuit, flour, peppery citrus hops. Clean flavor, creamy texture, light carbonation, lingering bitterness. A nice session, too expensive.

Pours hazy rich golden with little head. Sweet, piney, sour and citrusy notes. Sharp hoppy flavor gives way to subtle notes of licorice and earthy overtones with an exceptionally clean finish. Very refreshing.
