COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Nipponia is brewed using two Japanese original materials; "Kaneko Golden," the Japanese ancient barley, and "Sorachi Ace," the hop which once was bred in Japan. Please enjoy the citrus flavor, the golden color and the complex taste.

Important!: This is the original top-fermented version. From summer 2011, Nipponia has been bottom fermented. See that entry.

Pours a typical straw yellow - not inspiring, but at least the white head is thick, frothy and persistent. Aroma is mainly yeasty with a fruity overtone and a malty undertone as well as some sweetness. Flavor is malty and fruity with a surprising hoppy tone and hints of both apple and grapefruit, as well as sweet, sour and bitter touches. Texture is smooth and a little thick, just subtly tingly. Give it a try!

From a bottle poured a golden color with a good amount of head. Nice light malty hoppy flavor with a quick finish.

Another great-looking bottle from this brewery. Contents pours hazy gold with a large white head that fades to a coat. Aroma has zest of old lemons, doughy/ earthy yeast, apples, shiso leaf. Delicate, slightly creamy texture. Taste is fruity and spicy with quite a woody end. The fruits include pear and apple; the spices white pepper, shiso leaf and coriander. But there are other fruity notes I can’t identify at all. And sherbet drops. The spices take over again after the wood. I don’t know how much of my enjoyment of this is related to its apparent originality. Intriguing and good - but pricey.

Bottle. Poured hazy golden color with an average white frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate hop, yeast and citrus aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet & sour flavor with a medium sweet & sour finish of moderate to long duration. Good drinkable brew.

This is the best golden ale i have tasted. Pours cloudy golden with a sexy white head. Aroma of citrus and straw and a slightly spicy note. Taste is a touch sweet but finishes clean and dry. The carbonation is slightly sharp but it still remains smooth and mildly bitter at the finish, alcohol is a touch heavy in my opinion but still very smashable. Its much more complex and interesting than most other beers of this style I’ve tried. This beer sits around $20 retail in Australia which is a touch expensive but worth it if you want to try an amazing golden ale.

Pours hazy golden color wiith white head. Aromas of citrus and yeast with some mustiness. Flavors of lemon and bread dough with some earthiness. Medium body with lively carbonation. A nice beer but probably wouldn’t buy again because of the steep price tag.

The pour is a cloudy yellow. Aroma is heavy on the citrus hops. Taste is a very balanced mix of fruity sweetness and some citrus hops. Aftertaste has some sweet breadlike notes as well. A very enjoyable and easily drinkable ale.

Bottle. Sweet looking bottle. Pours a glowing sunburnt orange with a tall airy frothy white sticky head. Nice fresh dry hop aroma, sorachi ace all the way and it seems fairly noble like, light biscuit sweetness, lovely, dry, maybe light cedar. Flavor follows, very dry, all sorachi ace, medium bitterness, dry dry, little alcohol shows in the finish because of this, light fruit and lemon, lemon cookie, touch of white pepper. Light bodied, with larger slightly sharp carbonation, lightly milky. Very nice beer, surprisingly the alcohol is killing it a bit for me though.

Draft at Milltown. Pours a soft straw yellow with one finger of white head. Nose is showing lemonzest and mild wood with a citrusy sweetness. Flavor is predominantly Sorachi Ace with a sweet lemon rind character and mild herbal quality with some spice. Palate is zesty with a medium bitterness.

thanks to Kyotolefty at RBSG’10 Grand Tasting - clear, golden yellow pour. crackery malts, light peppery spice, wheaty, hay and musk.
