COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Nipponia is brewed using two Japanese original materials; "Kaneko Golden," the Japanese ancient barley, and "Sorachi Ace," the hop which once was bred in Japan. Please enjoy the citrus flavor, the golden color and the complex taste.

Important!: This is the original top-fermented version. From summer 2011, Nipponia has been bottom fermented. See that entry.

550ml Bottle: Very faint citrus and grain aroma. Maybe I cannot smell today? Poured yellow/gold in color with a large, creamy, rocky, loose, white head that greatly diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Lightly sparkling. Full of tiny, small, and a few medium-sized particles throughout. Flavor is lightly sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of grains, malt, light Sorachi Ace hops, slight lemon, and yeast. Light to medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Dry, Sorachi Ace, yeast, and malt finish.

Lovely hazy yellow pour. nose is like lemon sherbert or lemonade. Sorachi in the house! The mouth is lovely with a decent malt presence, very light, very Japanese, with a decent citrus lemon bitter finish. Golden ale/saison hybrid? A little cloying after a while. Another well made Hitachino,

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2011 Hitachino nipponia. 22oz bottle from Andrew... Pours a pale orange apricot with thin soapy white head... Aroma of grassy and tangerine citrus hoppiness... Flavors arenít as pungent but more subdued with the same profile which the aroma offered up. Mellow and soft carbonation and body. 8/4/7/4/14

Yellow straw body with lasting head. Straw, citrus and a little yeast on the nose. Not much difference in the taste, smooth, medium body and donít notice the alcohol.

Bottle: Pours a slightly hazy pale golden with a stringy-lacing froth of white head. Has a fresh citrusy hoppy nose with some mild pale malty sweetness. Starts with pretty good fullness and mild malty sweetness with a resiny grapefruity hoppiness before a more astringent drier bitter finish. A pretty unique concept, but could use a little more balance which would come through more diverse ingredients.

550 mL bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA, opened 9/8/10. I missed this at the RBSG Grand Tasting so Iím glad they decided to distribute to the US. Pours a hazy orange-lemon color with a thin white head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of earthy, citrus hops, citrus zest, pale caramel malty notes and a bit of a nutty note. The taste is huge citrus notes, orange, blood orange, grapefruit, dry orange soda. Some faint caramel malts. Medium bodied. Tasty beer.

Draft at Popeye (Tokyo), a big grainy malt palate with a strong alcohol sweetness. A bit much.

Pours a typical straw yellow - not inspiring, but at least the white head is thick, frothy and persistent. Aroma is mainly yeasty with a fruity overtone and a malty undertone as well as some sweetness. Flavor is malty and fruity with a surprising hoppy tone and hints of both apple and grapefruit, as well as sweet, sour and bitter touches. Texture is smooth and a little thick, just subtly tingly. Give it a try!
