This Nipponia is brewed using two Japanese original materials; "Kaneko Golden," the Japanese ancient barley, and "Sorachi Ace," the hop which once was bred in Japan. Please enjoy the citrus flavor, the golden color and the complex taste.

Important!: This is the original top-fermented version. From summer 2011, Nipponia has been bottom fermented. See that entry.

Bottle. Sweet looking bottle. Pours a glowing sunburnt orange with a tall airy frothy white sticky head. Nice fresh dry hop aroma, sorachi ace all the way and it seems fairly noble like, light biscuit sweetness, lovely, dry, maybe light cedar. Flavor follows, very dry, all sorachi ace, medium bitterness, dry dry, little alcohol shows in the finish because of this, light fruit and lemon, lemon cookie, touch of white pepper. Light bodied, with larger slightly sharp carbonation, lightly milky. Very nice beer, surprisingly the alcohol is killing it a bit for me though.

Draft at Milltown. Pours a soft straw yellow with one finger of white head. Nose is showing lemonzest and mild wood with a citrusy sweetness. Flavor is predominantly Sorachi Ace with a sweet lemon rind character and mild herbal quality with some spice. Palate is zesty with a medium bitterness.

Sampled at the Richmond Gathering XII. Semi-hazy dull yellow pour with ring of bright white head. Nose is like sweaty gym socks and a light citrus lemon spice. Flavor follows quite nicely, but with a bit of a candi sugar sweetness. More lemon citrus and again, spicy. Moderate high carbonation. Pretty tasty offering, but not something I’d be seeking out again.

Pours a hazy yellow, slightly fizzy white head. Goes clear as it warms - pretty significant chill haze going on here! Aroma was lightly of grain and accented with some lemony malts. Flavor was a lightly grainy note, almost with a rice note even though I don’t think any was used here, followed by a lemony hop finish with a faint spice note. Nice enough, but sort of boring. Very happy to try this experiment though!

Bomber? from Wine and Cheese in Clayton, MO. Pours hazy gold with a 2 finger foamy white head. Aroma is something like a citric belgian. Medium body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is citric, and there seems to be a spicey, gingery touch. It is bitter, but the spice seems stronger. It is very flavorful, though that tails off in the finish. Still a great drinking beer.

Pours hazy yellow / orange with a frothy dense head. The aroma has lightly toasted malt, light spice, citrus zest, light soap, nectar fruit, flowers and saison-like traits - quite clean overall. The body is medium and crisp that’s quite grainy and has spritzy frothy carbonation. The toast has chamomile, lavender and other herbal traits along with being very flowery, powder and notes of soft spices, peaches and nectarines. The finish is a little spicier and adds some pear notes. This is an interesting and unique beer.
