COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Nipponia is brewed using two Japanese original materials; "Kaneko Golden," the Japanese ancient barley, and "Sorachi Ace," the hop which once was bred in Japan. Please enjoy the citrus flavor, the golden color and the complex taste.

Important!: This is the original top-fermented version. From summer 2011, Nipponia has been bottom fermented. See that entry.

6.5% bottle from Kyoto Isetan.great lovely deep gold color, decent head of foam & some lacing. Rich golden ale aroma, plums, fruits and a bit of malty butterscotch. Tasty flavor, full bodied, sweet, citrus, mellow, complex & hard to pin down. Really nice stuff. I think they nailed the style but in a smooth, mellow way.

Somewhat lagery nose, with some spice and a hint of citrus coming through from the hop. Pours a medium gold with a fluffy head. Flavour is a reasonably balanced with a strong overlay from the cask aging that I assume its had. Some creamy, woody notes and a threading bitterness from the hop. Finish is slightly cloying but overall not bad.

Gold pour, white head. This is pretty damn good for the style. Yeasty, wheaty, some really nice flavors in a style that usually isn’t good at all.

Poured clear golden with a small fizzy head. Aroma of honey and sour vegetables. Medium body, flavour is of boiled vegetables. Horrible.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a crystal clear Lucozade like colour with a bubbly white broken head. The aroma is honey malt leading to a weak bitter, vegetable like flavour. The palate is smooth and a little malty. Fine to taste, but I don’t understand the high rating.

Bottle. Pours very clear golden with a lacy white head. Smells old, honey and some cooked vegetables. Tastes wrong.

Bottle shared at Dean’s sticky table tasting thanks to Jmgreenuk. Pours clear golden with a white head. Aroma of honey and grain, a little sick. Flavour is over moderate sweet and light bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

sample at Dean’s Monthly Den Haag tasting courtesy of JmGreenUK. Thin creamy white head. Clear golden pour. Nice enough brew.

Bottle. Pours straw yellow with thin head. Bread in the nose, balanced smooth and soft on the palate. Not much bitterness or carbonation. Not my favourite hop so the flavour not great for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cold bottle. This cost £11…what was I thinking? Maybe I was drunk at the time. Anyway, it’s a nice beer - very different. Honey, spice, sake, whisky, vanilla. Reminds me of an Innis and Gunn beer, just 10 times the price and not quite as nice. Looks really good though.
