3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 11, 2013 Bottle, 02/22/2012. Pours burnt amber, thin white head dissipates to surface haze within a minute or so, gone a while after that. Aroma carries banana, candi sugar maltiness, slight lactic twinge, ginger, mix of spices reminiscent of witbier. Taste is similar, but the malts take on almost a stale character, though there is an interesting funk hanging out in the background with characteristic Hitachino house yeast. A brew with a great story, but it comes out to me a bit muddled and confused in direction, undoubtedly due to the unique circumstances of its creation. For this alone though, it was worth the try.
Re rate on 3/11/2013: Much more carbonation now, lively medium palate. Sour notes are less prominent in the aroma. Taste has improved considerably, darker malt components with nicely aged hop component, bitter with notes of caramel and slight citrus. Moving more towards aged barleywine/strong ale now, much better than a year ago somehow.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The pour is almost copper in color with a white head (maybe a little off-white). A really interesting aroma. Strong banana with a fair amount of spices to it as well. Lots of sweet bread and maybe a light ester quality (apple?). The flavor does have a light tartness to it, but itís really just more of a typical Belgian style flavor. Banana and spices are prominent, as is the bread and maybe some yeast flavor, too.

What a fantastic beer! Iím not a huge fan of the regular White, but this beer is amazing from the start. Not as much Lactic as I was expecting, but it adds just enough complexity to make this a really interesting beer. I canít pick out a flaw, itís all around awesome. Nice orange background with upfront maltiness, a lot of flavor packed into each sip. Donít know if this mistake would work out so well every time, and certainly not necessarily something thatís feasible in every brewery, but I love it.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
550ml bottle. The pour reveals a cloudy, dusky, dark amber body with a moderate head of smooth, dirty khaki foam. Dissipating at an average pace, the head turns to a wispy patch, leaving delicate, tattered lace behind. The nose reveals a decidedly lactic yeast contingent, hinting at buttermilk sourness but not suite as intense. Distant fusel notes are alcoholic and slightly rubbery. Underlying malts tow the line between stale whiskey and caramelized candy sugar, and a spice component suggests of peppercorns. Odd smelling brew. Flavors are similar, though perhaps not quite as edgy. A considerably amount of caramelized candy sweetness runs throughout, accompanied by a countering lacto-wheaty twang. The alcohol component really harkens to a bad, spicy whiskey of sorts. In the mouth, considerable alcoholic warmth brings a slight burn while thinning the malty sugars. Carbonation is very soft, lacking the life that it needs. Overall, Iím pretty disappointed with the brew. I guess they did what they had to do to salvage the batch, but I probably would have opted for dumping it. Itís drinkable...but barely.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is fruit, sweetness (lactic) and a hint of vegetables/spices. The flavor is similar to the aroma, only with the vegetables left out. Interesting ale, the vegetable element almost put it down in score, but thankfully it was really the spices.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
bottle.. a little surprised by the other reviews, did we get a bad bottle?... all their beers have a distinct yeast character that I quickly identify, this beer is drowning it, presumable because of how it was brewed, dark fruits, a bit of lacto, a little caramel... not a fan

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours a bright copper with a thick white head. Nose is tropical fruit and Belgian like yeasts. Very complex and creamy mouthfeel and high drinkability. Enjoyed this with a spicy Thai dish and it was heaven. Great story and great beer.
