Orange IPA

Bottle thanks to Alemax. Pours copper with lots of floaters, pulp. White head settles quickly with minimal lacing. Aroma is strong resinous, piney hops, citrus. Flavor is citrus, tangerine with a resinous, piney, floral hop finish. Soft carbonation, medium body, and juicy texture. A juicy, mild IPA. Refreshing, good for style.

Poured from a 12oz bottle marked 8/13 into a tulip glass. One 12oz bottle cost $5.49 ($0.46/oz). /> Dai Dai IPA pours a nice orange color with a shock of white head that looks nice in the glasses. There’s a large amount of floating particulate that could be because of the fact that the beer was 5 months old or it might be from the beer’s production. The nose is mostly orange candy, almost as though someone crushed up some orange smarties or poured some Tang into the glass. There are touches of citrus hop presence here that comes with a little bit of caramel or sugar sweetness. The palate is interesting, with light citrus hop notes (lemon, orange zest) accompanying some malt sweetness and a little bit of pine resin. To me, it’s a little artificial, but it’s not unpleasant at all. /> This beer is drinkable in that the alcohol is almost completely hidden in the flavor profile. That said, some of the orange candy sweetness verges on being cloying.

This is an interesting beer, and I’ve love to have an opportunity to try it fresh. For a fruit beer, it gets fairly high marks for taste, but the fact that they’re trying to call it an IPA makes me retreat on some of those points. Interesting, but far too expensive for what you’re getting.

330 ml bottle bought at Craftissimo in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

Translucent honey orange colour; One and a half finger head and crumpet off-white foam which lasts about 3 minutes; Excellent sticky lacing with active carbonation; Fragrant sweet aroma of moderate ale malt, with orange flesh and peel, floral, honey, faint grapefruit, light vanilla and faint grass; Nice medium sweet taste of ale malt, with strong orange peel, light molasses, yeast, dough, light earth, light liquorices, strong lime, and strong herbal grassy hops; Mid to light body, oily palate; Mouth feel is lightened IPA with the usual grapefruit and pine elements being replaced by orange, peels and fruitiness. Still pretty malty and doughty. Sweetness is surprisingly low and pleasant; Hoppiness still shines with orange, floral and light grass in nose, strong lime, light earth and very sharp grass in taste. Astringency is lastingly good for finish; Fairly dry after taste, very fruity and hoppy to mouth.

Comments: This one has very good aroma, looks, heads and palate. Its taste somehow doesn’t back it up: the orange taste is well expressed without being cloying, but at the expense of 3C-ish hops which makes micro IPA so tasty. With a little more 3Cs and fruity sweetness, it’ll take off and blow you away. One step from being top!

Taste of orange and american hops. No yeast character. Weird mustiness at the end. Not the best. Brilliant colour though.

On tap @ Haven Gastropub. Amber in color with an off-white head. Nose is really sweet and malty. Lots of caramel, light orange oil, and some old hops. Meh. Flavor is no better. Just sweet and muddled. A bit of orange along with caramel malt and stale hops. Minimal bitterness.
