Commercial Description:
Caramel, roasted, black and chocolate malts provide an explosion of coffee like flavors. The strong espresso character comes from the addition of espresso beans to the boil. Notes of vanilla, dark fruit , cocao and chocolate. The very unusual character of Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout stems from the fact that Kiuchi Brewery is using the recipe of a Russian Imperial Stout as base. Pitch black color, big brown head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted bitterness, black currants, dark fruits.

Pours very dark brown with brown head. Aroma of coffee grounds, burnt malts and chocolate. Slightly sweet with lots of coffee with some chocolate and caramel. Mild sourness and bitterness also. Full body with above average carbonation for a stout. Nice creamy mouthfeel. A very nice brew.

Had this on draft. Basically the best way to describe it is iced coffee meets a beer. Excellent color, aroma, flavor. Did not think the Japanese could make a beer this good. Great last beer of the night.

Pours a pitch black with a lovely thin brown head with decent retention. Aroma is dark chocolate & coffee, light alcohol. Nice roasty astringent coffee more than balances a sweet stout base. Lingering coffee finish, light tang to it. Thin body with a bit of creaminess to it, reasonable carb. This one is quite tasty - would have done with a bit more body, but beggars can’t be choosers!

Bottle from Rustico, VA. Very dark brown ’espresso’ appearance. Strong coffee and chocolate aroma. Balanced taste. Clean finish. A great combination of coffee and beer.

Small bottle from PF Changs. Pours near very dark brown with nice sustained brown head. Excellent roasty coffee aroma. Flavor of chocolate, cocoa, coffee was not overbearing which I really liked. Nice velvety body. But it is horribly expensive, so I have to dock it a point.

Bottle from City Beer Store in SF. I just wasn’t really that impressed with this one overall. Someone I was tasting with commented that, "It’s like a cold cup of coffee." It has some quality that makes it similar to Hitachino White strangely. Appearance is dark brown with a huge tan head that takes forever to go down. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, and some funk. Flavor is coffee, roasted malt, and a sort of sour Japanese quality that I can’t quite describe. Not particularly strong flavor overall. A little creamy and pretty smooth on the palate.

33cl bottle from Whole Foods (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark brown cola cola color with a massive tannish-yellow two finger head that settles slowly. Aroma is roasted and malty with notes of coffee, pine, juniper, chocolate, asian spice some faint sweetness. Flavor is roasted and malty as well with notes of coffee bean, asian spice, dark chocolate, some caramel and honey sweetness. Generally medium to full body with a roasted malty and spicy finish.
