Travlr (700), Washington, Washington DC, USA Dec 14, 2008 Deep maroon color with very thin tan head. Aroma of coffee, flavor of malt and light chocolate with unsubtle coffee overtones. No surprise I suppose. Well balanced overall. j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Dec 12, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with a small tan head. Deep roasted aromas of coffee, chocolate, and malt. Thin body with a light but long lasting finish. 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 11, 2008 Pours a thick pitch black with a fantastic tan and brown rocky swirl of a head on top. Rich espresso bean aroma, quality roasted beans not some cheap crap, creamy rich vanilla and cream with some lovely chocolate covered fruit notes. Probably the best aroma of any coffee stout. Wow some serious yum. Excellent dry espresso bean finish. Flavor is soooo creamy like a milkstout, mellow vanilla, faint burntness, chocolate covered cherries, balanced coffee taste. I love the dryness, doesnt muck the focus up with molasses flavors. This beer demands some respect. Super drinkable body, creamy with fine active sharp carbonation. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Dec 8, 2008 Updated: Dec 10, 200811.2 ounce bottle. Poured into a nonic. Pours out like chocolate syrup, fills the glass pitch black with a very dark tan head. Billowing foam despite a very cold serving temperature, thick chunks of lace, crazy retention. Aroma is very robust. Sweetened coffee, roast, dark chocolate, and a bit of soy sauce. Flavor is black coffee, a slight vegetal note, coffee grounds, bitter chocolate. A little astringent. Dry bitter finish. Body is a touch too thin. Pretty good beer. blutt59 (2045), Dallas, Texas, USA Dec 2, 2008 bottle, tar pitch color with wispy crema, nose is a vegetal roast with syrupy flavor of soybeans, coffee and cocoa, nice bitterness on the finish DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Nov 30, 2008 (Bottle). Sweet roasty aroma, vegetable and fruit notes. Black body, fluffy lasting brown head. Flavor is sweet coffee and chocolate, ripe fruits, roastiness. A little too sweet overall, but still enjoyable. Sparky27 (1563), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Nov 29, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep black with a 2 finger fluffy tan head and chunky head. Nose is coffee grounds, roasty malts and cocoa. Taste is chalky cocoa, burnt malt and coffee grounds. Medium creamy mouth feel. Reminds me a lot of Bells Java Stout, and the Bells version isn’t $5+ a bottle. tarheels86 (705), Washington DC, USA Nov 29, 2008 330 mL bottle. Pours a menacing used motor oil black with a powerful dark brown head- fierce. Okay lacing. Aromas of- surprise- espresso, whole Kenyan coffee beans, dark chocolate, raw cocoa. Does not smell like a stout but rather just a straight up great cup of coffee. Taste though is not too overpowered by the coffee- the roasted malts shine through. Mouthfeel is creamy but the body is slightly thin. Aftertaste is dry, bitter, and surprisingly sour. A very interesting brew albeit pricey. I wish it were more intense and went all out.
