GranvilleTim (467), Granville, Illinois, USA Apr 3, 2009 Dark black pour with a dark brown head. Aroma is of roasted malt with hints of coffee. Taste Taste is of roasted malt, but it has a real bitter aftertaste which leaves a dry mouth feel. The bitterness does subside a little but it is too much. The head lasted the whole drink leaving a nice lace. Loved the aroma. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Mar 29, 2009 Bottle (330ml). Poured deep chestnut red, impenetrable once in the glass - very large and lasting frothy tan head (4-). Dry aroma, complex - deep nutty roast, alcohol, raisin, coffee, and lactose. The taste follows, natch - dryer, more lactic and stronger coffee notes - quite acidic - seems to have a bit of cranberry or tart cherry lingering in the background. Average body, decent carbonation, and a long roasty + bitter finish. Very solid, really makes you puzzle over it .... * now I read it, I can totally get the RIS base to this one, it’s borderline imperial. joergen (8430), Frederiksberg, Denmark Mar 21, 2009 Bottle.
Dark brown coloured with a medium sized beige head.
Light roasted aroma of fresh grinded coffee with notes of dried fruits.
Roasted flavour of fresh grinded coffee with notes of dried fruits and liquorice.
Roasted finish of coffee. MiP (8793), Sønderborg, Denmark Mar 21, 2009 Bottle, 7.5%. Good coffee aroma. Black colour. Very small brown head. Good, distinct flavour, some coffee, strong liquorice. Some yeast, a little smoke. Creamy finish. Quite good. Ungstrup (14758), Frederiksberg, Denmark Mar 20, 2009 Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin dark brown head. The aroma is very sweet with strong notes of roasted malt and espresso coffee. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, espresso coffee, and abit of wood, leading to a dry roasted coffee finish. yespr (11649), Copenhagen O, Denmark Mar 20, 2009 12 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a light redish rim and a small chocolate brown head. Roasted malt, chocolate and herbal coffee aroma. Dry and dense chocolate malty flavoured with a distinct coffee bitterness coming through. Smooth vanilla notes too. Ends slight herbal and roasted coffee flavoured and bitter. Chocolate into the very far finish. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Mar 18, 2009 12 oz bottle courtesy of daknole. Pours an opaque black with a generous tan head. The aroma is rich with multilayer coffee and mocha sensations. The flavor does not quite live up to the aroma there is plenty coffee but it is a bit of an "old grounds" taste. The finish is long with lingering coffee. The mouthfeel was just a bit thin with an acidic quality. Overall: I really the aroma of this but the taste just did not measure up. Still, a fairly good brew. Thanks dakine. tmoreau (527), Lombard, Illinois, USA Mar 11, 2009 On tap at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle, IL. Served in a trappist glass. A rich, black/brown pour with a thick, foamy, light brown head and solid, clingy lacing. The aroma was roasty, with bitter espresso and dark chocolate and a little cream mixed in. The flavor was also roasty, bitter, espresso, baker’s chocolate, with a little molasses thrown in. Full bodied with a rich, silky mouthfeel. Impressive variation of the style.
