The aroma contains some chocolate, espresso, and licorice. The flavor is slightly bitter but also sweet as well. I taste some chocolate, espresso, and also a hint of some dark fruit giving it a slight sourness. The mouthfeel is rather thick. Overall a very nice stout. marcus (1918), Sacramento, California, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 22, 2007 11.2oz bottle, no date from John’s Grocery. Almost black with a 1/2 finger tan head, fades to a ring before long. Lots of coffee (plus the acidity that comes with it), roasted malts and chocolate (both milk and dark). A touch of salty soy sauce was in there as well. The flavor was quite roasty with a fair amount of acidity again, some dark and sweet milk chocolate and anise following through to a bitter chocolatey dry finish. Alcohol was present, but never to the point of Medium creamy body with moderate carbonation. This wasn’t ungodly complex, but what was there is very good. Glad to have had the chance to try this one. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 15, 2007 From a 12oz bottle via footy. Intense, perfumed espresso, bean, oak and vanilla aroma. Strong, rich, acidic, fresh earth, roasted carob and bits of spice. Real, delicious strong coffee aroma. Nice. Pours a pitch black, with oily mahogany fringes and supple, silky head in stained hickory. Inviting. A pretty typical middle stout body carries a particularly expressive and delicious coffee flavor. It has to have one of the most forward coffee flavors I’ve ever had in a beer. It’s coffee first and then malt, yet with some tremendous blending of the two. There’s a great interplay between the salty, bright roast of the malt and the acidic, fruity sweetness of the coffee’s higher essences. Resplendent. There’s some dust off of the grounds, and a bit of the syrupy sticky resin that comes from a pot of Turkish coffee, heavily seasoned with Turbinado. In the middle salty sea grasses and drying oak. Man, this is good. Finishes on a light crisp note of mint chocolate and leaf. Bright, friendly and percolating. Body is near perfection for the style. Not overly heavy, instead carrying the flavors on just the right amount of sugar and totally undetectable alcohol. If you love coffee, you’ll love this beer.
