3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 andrewturba (446) - Alberta, CANADA - APR 20, 2013
Pours a clear copper colour with suspended solids(possible proteins) and a 1/4 inch long lasting off white head. Aroma is rich maltiness, grassy, mildly perfumy, smooth but light wood(I know it’s cedar from the description but it’s not super distinctive), and some fruity esters. Flavour is smooth cedar, creamy, grassy, earthy, caramel, and sweet malt. I really like the cedar barrel twist on a classic style!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Reimer96 (581) - Alberta, CANADA - APR 19, 2013
Pours a clear dark copper with a nice frothy off white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma of sweet pale malts, cedar, grassy hops and some fruity notes. Taste is pale malts, grassy and earthy hops with some caramel and a slight woodiness with an awesome dry finish. Surprisingly good English ipa with a Japanese twist.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Vignale (1364) - Malmö, SWEDEN - APR 16, 2013
Funkar mycket bra ihop, ja t o m gör den annars ganska anonyma IPA:an
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Lukaduke (1000) - Portland, Maine, USA - APR 11, 2013
Pours a orange brownish copper color with a finger of sticky foam. The nose is earthy forest, pine, cedar, citrus, grapefruit and even a trace fo cinnamon. The palate follows the nose with a nice caramel malty backbone that is livened by some juicy citrus hops and spicy complex cedar barrel character. Great juicy notes lead into bitter lingering barrel complexity !
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Wombata (322) - Kobe, JAPAN - MAR 18, 2013
Aroma: earthy, hop, and malt
Flavor: understated pepper, ripe bitter orange plus peel, bitter hop finish.
Comment: Some nice character but would like a little more body.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 beer_est_deus (214) - örebro, SWEDEN - MAR 1, 2013
Koppar-brun färgad med lätt färgat skum. Doft: Kompost, jäst, stall, rök, trä, jord. Smak: Trä, charkuteri, malt (typ stor stark), jäst. Blir på något sätt bättre undertiden man dricker.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 maekchu (1081) - Hirakata, JAPAN - FEB 26, 2013
Bottle (from tasting session notes). 2008 vintage. Good pepper/cedar spice / malty mid with apple & pear, peach / Final is moderately peppery with moderate bitterness. A finely balanced brew. Has finesse and an extra dimension from the cedar aging.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 olliejobbins (325) - Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - FEB 6, 2013
330ml bottle. Pours a cloudy bright amber. Aroma is of citrus fruits, hops and minimal alcohol. Taste is interesting and as others have said, not like an IPA. It is hoppy and fruity at first with a bit of smokiness coming through. Bout then, it tastes strongly of alcohol. Strong alcohol or spirits and finally hops as the last aftertaste.
2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 trapped (330) - TURKEY - FEB 2, 2013
Bottle. Orange-yellow color with slight haziness, small off-white foamy head, doughy aroma, slightly bland-bitter taste, low carbonation, long metallic finish. Not a very good beer.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 lawman357 (93) - Missouri, USA - JAN 15, 2013
Pretty impressed. This is my first real Japanese Ale, so my first Hitachino by default. Definitely strikes a balance in the citrusy hops and malty sweet. I did not pick up on the cedar but I was also not looking for it. The astringency of cedar most likely increases the predominant flavors creating a seemless, quite tasty, ale.
