3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a jet black with a thin off-white head. Aroma is some caramel, but there’s a sourness that dominates. I wonder what makes it sour. Flavor is sweet caramel and toffee, with just a little bit of sourness. Has a nice smooth body. This is okay. Not undrinkable, but odd.

1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Very disappointing. Dark brown, with creamy head. Lots of caramel, molasses and something sour. Watery body. Sweet finish. Not to repeat.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
L: pours a very dark brown, with a little light getting through around the edges. Bubbly tan head.
S: not getting much, some milky sweetness, stout malt notes.
T: nothing extra coming through in the taste, pleasant basic stout qualities. Not as sweet as I thought it would be.
F: quite full on the palate for 4% ABV. Some carbonation up front.
O: I was expecting not to like this after reading some other reviews, actually this is a simple tasty stout that sits somewhere just below your Irish dry, like a Guinness draught. Can’t complain.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle to snifter.
Appearance: very nice. Dark black, big white head that continually roils.
Looks a little thin for a stout.
Aroma: not much here, some caramel, brown sugar.
Taste: vegetable, vinegar, plum, tar. Aftertaste is cardboard. Not good.
Such a disappointment, since the Hitachino espresso stout is excellent.
I am somewhat amazed at the way the head builds after the beer has settled. I’ll have to bust out an old fluid mechanics textbook someday to see if I can expain it.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Small tan head with a final thin persistent layer. Clear very dark brown. Aroma is weak, roasted malt with sweetness and burnt fruits. Flavours are toasted malts, coffee, sligth dark fruit and cheesy out of place. Watery medium oily, medium body. Not very pleasant for me.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from Taniguchi. Pouring a deep reddish brown that settles black in the glass with a fizzy/foamy tan head. The nose is definitely sweet with that lacto character to it, savoury dark chocolate with hints of roastiness. Medium bodied with a scratchy carbonation rather than the velvety smoothness I am looking for. The taste is roasty, dark chocolate, sweet a touch of candied figs or plums. Decent.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a pitch black with a 1 finger head of tan foam with plenty of sticky lacing.
It smells milky, a bit on the sweet side, not a lot of firmness to the aromas.
The taste starts off sweetish, has that Milk Stout flavour though it IS subdued because of the low abv. It finishes neutral taste wise and watery body wise.
A true session ale here but I’m not leaning towards buying a lot more and sessioning.
