3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
THOUGHTS: Complex, but in a fairly subtle way. I guess what I’m trying to say is that it had a lot of complexity for a beer that was full of lighter flavors that aren’t necessarily all that complex. Hid alcohol fairly well among such light flavors. I was surprised that it was quite sour. Great balance with sweetness, sourness and acidity. But complex doesn’t always mean great.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a hazy, orangey gold with an average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left good lacing. The aroma had light cereal; moderate fruity, dusty and musty yeast; pear; peach, pineapple; a little flora; lemon; lemon rind; apricot, and slightly sour fruit. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, sour and acidic, and slightly bitter; while the finish was lightly sweet and bitter, and moderately sour and acidic with a surprisingly long duration for all the the light flavors. There was light fruits, light citrus, pear, peach, green grape, lemon, apricot, maybe a little pineapple, a little citrus rind, pineapple near the edge where it is bitter; yeast; sour fruit; a little honey; and duty and musty yeast. The light to medium and dry body was made to feel even lighter by fizzy carbonation and a dry and slightly alcoholic finish.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle@Jano. Opaque amber color, thick white head. Fairly sweet, malty flavor with hints of ginger and sake. Creamy mouthfeel. Medium-full body, medium carbonation. Slightly too heavy on the alcohol.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
330ml bottle. Clear red amber color. Small size, white head, disappears. Pure farty green shit in aroma. Sort of softcore version of morning farts. Not good. Candy, sweet, I’m tempted to say bamboo, definitely something woody in taste. Sweet and sour, sake like finish. Covers alcohol very well. Nothing exciting, but not entirely dull. Roundy brew.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
06-SEP-2014, bottle @home, present from Marlene, thx:-)
Almost clear golden with low off-white head.
Aroma is rice, fruit and caramel. Taste is rice, over ripe fruit and a red fruit thing that I guess is from rice.
Sweet, ale-like caramel, a Little hoppy bitterness on the finish.
"I don’t put rice int my beer", well it Works here but I will never be a huge fan.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a hazy golden orange from the bottle with white head that leaves good lace. Aroma is soy, rice, nuts, caramel, and odd maltiness. Taste follows the same vein. It’s decent on it’s own, but a perfect match with Swedish Västerbotten-cheese. Who would’ve thought?

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Red ale, way too small head. Caramel malts, very lightly hopped, thin and grassy. Simplistic brown sugar taste, lightest of red fruit, not well enough developed. Hmm, disappointing. They make such good beers. (Bottle from Le Bon Marché)

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I poured an 11.2oz bottle into a goblet. It appears to have been bottled in September of 2013 and cost $5.04 ($0.45 per ounce).
Appearance: A washed out pinkish-red hue over an opaque body. Pours to an average-sized, white, foamy head which retains and laces fairly well.
Smell: Light fruit notes, especially berries. Nothing particularly distinctive.
Taste: Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale is a rather unique brew by the Kiuchi Brewery of Japan. It seems to have a simple recipe of just two-row with red rice and flaked barley used as adjuncts. The only hop is Chinook. This of course makes it difficult to classify, style-wise, though it’s also a challenge to describe and critique the flavor since it’s not something I or more beer drinkers are used to. I do enjoy the originality for sure. There’s a light fruit flavor throughout this palette, similar to strawberry or pomegranate, though I would not consider it “juicy” per se. I’ve no idea what red rice tastes like, and my only frame of reference for rice in beer would be Budweiser. Thankfully, this tastes nothing like that. It’s an interesting brew to say the least, and I find absolutely no off-flavors nor technical flaws even though this bottle may be about a year old. The hops are nowhere to be found, but since the overall palette is still plenty delectable, it’s forgivable.
Drinkability: I was rather surprised to see the 7% ABV on the bottle label, as this beer doesn’t have the robustness nor the body of such a strong brew (seems more like 5% to me). However, the deliver is pleasant: the mouthfeel is well-carbonated, but not fizzy, with a smooth texture and easy quaffability. Not much in the aftertaste, either, which is also fine by me.
