3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: FEB 6, 2013
Cloudy dark brown colour with dusty sediments; Small head and off-white foams with faded quickly; Minimal lacing and slight carbonation; Aroma of banana, sake, brown sugar and toffee; Medium to light body; Potent sweet taste of sake, sugar, burnt toffee and caramel. Alcohol taste is definitely sake style, quite subdued at first but with a warming - boiling sensation with repeated tasting; Pronounced hop bitterness and astringency as finish. Dry after taste. Fairly easy to mouth.
Comments: this Japanese take on BSA is quite unique. Overall, its taste is somewhat reminiscent of Leffe Brune, but with a much stronger presence of sugar and sake tastiness. It is also comparable to Hoegaarden Grand Cru, but itís darker, sweeter and even drier than the latter. As a BSA, its minuses being a deflating head, smell and taste are overtly sugar, burnt toffee and too hoppy. On the plus side, its sake character really gives it an interesting twist. So I think itís a brew all by its own. Not a true BSA, but worth having it again for what it is.

Bottle from Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Murky Amber colour with small white head. Aroma of figs and bread. Taste is dry and bitter with nice spice from the alcohol. Carbonation is quite prickly and body surprisingly light. Enjoyed it, but had better.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tan-amber color, dense ivory froth.
Intense honey liqueur aroma, and a tinge of chocolate.
Soft and gentle in spite of its high alcohol contents. Sweet and creamy texture. Rather short finish.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma is lighter berry. Cranberry raspberry. A little oak... A little sweet like a maple.
Pours reddish orange brown. Minimal head.
Taste is light..... Subtle. Dry. Juniper. Like a champagne yeast dryness. Like pine tips.
Palate is smooth dry. So dry! Bubbly. Boozy. But not bad smooth.
Overall this is a beer I enjoyed drinking but would not buy again. The tastes are very subtle. The pine note is huge but itís not sappy pine like an IPA: itís earthy pine like juniper. Interesting. More than anything I had the thought man I donít buy these because theyíre $5 and thatís expensive. But then I thought thatís only a $10 bomber... Thank you for being in 12o bottles. :)

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A bright, mid reddish orange coloured beer with a frothy yellow head. A light, dusty malt aroma, with red fruits and dark caramel. Medium, but fizzy mouthfeel. A rich fruity and malty flavour, red fruits, vinous and dark caramel, plus there is a tangy alcoholic bitterness in the background that cuts through the richness to lead into a heady, but well balanced finish.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. BB 2015.03. Slightly hazy copper body, medium tall creamy head. Wow, very nice desserty aroma with heavy toffee and some dried cherries and apples for balance. Yummy. The label has no English info about this being a barrel aged beer so it was an unexpected surprise ("Developed by a long maturation period" sounds like something that the local pale lager megabrewers also love to stress so itís not very informative) . However, taste is slightly less intense and perhaps a notch less complex too. Has notes of toffee, sweet caramel and some tender barrel wood. Finish is a bit sugary, not in the classic Belgian style but in American style. I am mainly thinking Founders here. Alcohol well hidden. This is a very nice, if only a bit too sweet beer.

Really pleasant creamy mouthfeel. Warming alcohol bit not overwhelming. Cooked cherries, tart, toffee, caramel, dough, banana, wood and some mashrooms in the aroma. Milsly sweet with notes of alcohol like dry port wine. Good balance. Easy to drink and enjoyable. Good one.
