3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: FEB 6, 2013
Cloudy dark brown colour with dusty sediments; Small head and off-white foams with faded quickly; Minimal lacing and slight carbonation; Aroma of banana, sake, brown sugar and toffee; Medium to light body; Potent sweet taste of sake, sugar, burnt toffee and caramel. Alcohol taste is definitely sake style, quite subdued at first but with a warming - boiling sensation with repeated tasting; Pronounced hop bitterness and astringency as finish. Dry after taste. Fairly easy to mouth.
Comments: this Japanese take on BSA is quite unique. Overall, its taste is somewhat reminiscent of Leffe Brune, but with a much stronger presence of sugar and sake tastiness. It is also comparable to Hoegaarden Grand Cru, but it’s darker, sweeter and even drier than the latter. As a BSA, its minuses being a deflating head, smell and taste are overtly sugar, burnt toffee and too hoppy. On the plus side, its sake character really gives it an interesting twist. So I think it’s a brew all by its own. Not a true BSA, but worth having it again for what it is.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This is a hazy, bright amber coloured beer with sweet toffee and red fruity flavours, earthy and peppery hop notes with orange marmalade and vanilla on the finish. Excellent!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle, pours hazy golden brown with a white head. The nose is malty, very caramel with wheat in the nose. Smooth caramel and pleasant malt texture, with a good hop bitter balance, the belgian yeast flavours take a back seat here, but they are there in the background. Nice beer.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This one was more interesting in concept than execution. I actually drink sake a lot but did not notice any sake flavors in this. Some aspects of tannins, but mainly in the mouthfeel. It didn’t stand alone as a belgian strong ale as I’d hoped, but still alright. Caramelly and a bit hoppy without being bitter or pungent at all. Anyway, was an OK strong ale, but as a speciality beer it did not deliver what was promised at least to my tongue.

Bottled as Tokyo Station Extra High. Bought at Le Collier Maranouchi at the Tokyo Station, the knowledgeable staff member at the shop recommended it and explained it was the same as the Hitachino Nest XH - indeed the bottle shape and cap markings are identical. This beer pours a hazy red with an off-white head. Aroma is caramel and toffee. Taste is caramel and toffee, sweet with a nice hoppy balance. Good carbonation and medium mouthfeel.

330ml from Carpenters, Carlow. Pours a brown golden colour with a finger head that fades. Strong malty aroma with hints of toffee and fruit. Complex fruity, malty, sweet taste that has many undertones. Low carbonation on tongue and a slight sweet malty finish that hangs slightly. Overall a bloody good beer that has been well crafted with many flavours packed in.

Bottle from the Dram Shop in Sheffield. Pour a hazy amber with a small white head. Flavour is sweet with notes of sherry, caramel and some pine in the hops. Very nice beer.
