3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 djroehler (175) - Minnesota, USA - JAN 23, 2013Cloudy copper color, with a slight off white head. Smells strongly of sake and yeast. Bready and lightly toasty start with a large sake punch, vanilla and caramel, crisp carbonation on the finish. Very good, but the sake could get overwhelming.

330ml bottle. A real odd one this. Some sweetness and light vinegar taste, almost reminded me of ketchup without the salt. The Belgian influence was apparent, but this one was odd, but not bad.

This was very underwhelming for what I expect out of a barrel aged Belgian strong ale. Pours a hazy amber. Aromas of malt and some yeast, not much on the barrel side of things. Flavor is malt, with some barely noticeable dried fruit character to it. The sake barrel character that I was expecting is barely there if I didn’t know it was aged in sake barrels, I very well could’ve missed that flavor aspect entirely. This needs to be put back in the barrels for another 6 months at least.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2013 Nice Aroma, I first got the vanilla and mild cherry of the oak casks along with alcohol and malt, very mild hops. The color was an orange amber with good carbonation and a nice white head. The Flavor at first is Carmel, vanilla and light stone fruit, followed by a briney acidic finish with a mild lingering bitterness. Overall I like this beer, I love Sake and was pleasntly surprised!

Pretty pretty barrel aged beer. Loads of presence without being overbearing. Malty in all of the right places, present yet yielding hops, nice touch of sour/"dill pickle" flavor in the finish. Smells of sea water when slightly warm.

Pours a hazy gold/amber, with a small cream head. I smell caramel, sweet dark fruits and yeast. I taste all of the same with hoppy, spicy and strong finish.

Pours hazy golden brown with off white head. Aroma of typical tropical fruity belgian yeast with hints of carmel and light oak. Taste the same but with a nice carmel malt background and lingering bittering hop or maybe the sake aftertaste. Overall a good example of a belgian strong with a different twist.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 wchesser (706) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 28, 2013
Nose is pretty typical belgian...some banana, caramel, toffee, with maybe some juniper like elements when I first opened it. Taste follows, but there is a lingering and definite sake flavor in the aftertaste if you look for it. Overall just an excellent belgian-style strong with a nice twist. Steep like all of the Nest stuff...always leaves me thinking I’m glad I tried it but probably wouldn’t pop for it again.
