4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Beautiful Pour. Looks like dark liquor as it hits the glass. Mahogany colored with a tan head, and some visible carbonation. Sweet, somewhat yeasty aroma. Chewy texture with flavors of caramel, apple, alcohol, wood, vanilla, and spice. Very unique and enjoyable.

Clear amber pour with white head. Nose dominated by toffee and wood. Super clean on the palate with sweet toffee, raisin, vanilla and spice. Starts sweet finishes bone dry. A tiny groggy burn but 8 percent holds up well.

Beautiful amber with thin blond head. Sweet aroma of flowers and malt, fruity. Tastes is sweet and Belgian yeasts. Flowery and fruity. Flavours don’t stick til the end though. Plain finish. Overall a quite good Belgian Ale attempt.

Big warming alcohol. This is boozy and makes no attempt to hide the fact. Quite malty and savoury.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Hasegawa. Poured into a Duvel glass. Pours a clear copper with a small beige head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aromas of rice, biscuit, fresh baked bread and alcohol. Average carbonation with a medium body. Cola-like mouthfeel. The sake definitely leaves a little too much sweetness on the palate for my liking. Malty with some wood (cedar?) noticeable as well. Slightly bitter finish that is warming. A solid beer, but not one of Hitachino’s best.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Hazy amber colour, with a small head that fades soon. Aroma of chocolate, figs, notes of ginger, pepper, spices, wood and alcohol (sake I guess, if you read the description). Medium creamy and sticky body. Palate has chocolate, spices, a hot touch, maybe of pepper, brandy (sake) flavour. Really good.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Honey and caramel notes throughout, alchohol finish. Thin, which is not a bad thing giving a cleaner less sticky finish than many barleywines. Gentle flavors which gets a little overwhelmed by the alchohol. Not bad at all, wouldn’t seek this out but would gladly drink it anytime.

33cl bottle bb11/2015, merci calisky. Quite a unique blend of Belgian yeast-powered chestnut caramels, apricot peel, fig jam and earth and more straightforward Doppelbock-style malteser sweetness emanate from aroma and in taste. Also some sake, almost jenever-like spirit in the nose. Sweetness in taste is well quenched by the dry sake barrel, making for an interesting sipper but not an instant crossover favourite, as I find the whole to deliver less than I expect from a 8% ale.
