This is one complex beer! I can’t quite figure it out, but smelling it, it almost reminds you of a pumpkin/autumn beer. Very herbal and malty-sweet smelling with a cloudy red/brown color. Flavors of fermented rice, chocolate, intense hopping, nutmeg, cinnamon, light brown sugar, and black pepper. This beer just has a strange funk, most likely from the sake barrels, but it definitely makes me want to try more. Definitely not the best strong ale ever, but this funk is not a Belgian funk, but a good funk none-the-less.

11.2 oz bottle. Fun, unique try here. Reddish orange pour with a thin swirling head. Dry, very wood like aroma. Flavor has a soft cherry impression, with a dry oak. Has a sweetness that does not bother in any way. Caramel, dry wood finish. Beat beverage involving sake I’ve ever had. Very nicely done.

Deep muddied brown coloured body with a ruby and violet tint, all with a very strong brown glow and a super thin, barely covering tan head. Aroma of sake, alcohol, grain, earth, cereal, chocolate, grapes, pungent figs and a bit more caramelised sugars. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong earthy flavour at first with an almost sour note at first then showing some very refined alcohol and oak flavours that leave the palate relatively clean and nice with barely any malt body showing through. Aftertaste shows the sake very cleanly with the oak, dry grass and earth, along with some fruit - figs and plums and the bit of caramelised sugars that get through the end. Overall, a well structured and nuanced beer that reminds me of a lot of japanese things, but this shows well, just not very strong or pungent throughout, which is okay. I sampled this stubby 33 cL bottle purchased from Tamura’s Market in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii on 31-December-2015 for US$5,49 sampled at home in Washington on 30-September-2016.

Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #54. I didn’t write down whether this was bottle (330ml I assume) or draught; seems likely to have been the former. Anyway, consumed at Acadia Café in Minneapolis, August 2008. Gorgeous lasting full thick off-white head tops a hazy deep rusty red-brown body...nose is lightly sweet, yeasty (basement dampness) with some hints of stewed fruit (apples, pears)...sweet and citrusy body, faintly hoppy, pleasant light alcohol buzz throughout, rather unusual overall, like a mix of Sprite and bourbon with Belgian yeast in a very full, not-quite-syrupy but well-carbonated body. Strange...didn’t love it, but now that I think about it and read these notes, wouldn’t mind trying it again.

Super sweet dark fruit molasses honey. Dark brown amber with a quickly fading off white head that leaves a small amount of thin foam on the top and around the edges of the glass. Figs, plumbs, dates. Very smooth. Velvety mouthfeel. A dry finish. I get some dry wine qualities at the end. Like a not quite so big Belgian quad. Very nice.

Bottle. Amber in colour, white low head. Sweet, malty with caramel, woody notes, dried fruits too. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Finish is bitter with some alcoholic taste.

Aroma is a heavy malty body, mocca, cookie dough, some fruity hoppy stuff as well, maybe orange. Taste is a heavy mocca bitterness with a sparkling citric sourness and a cake-like sweetness. Mouthfeel is crispy, full body, heavy, a little spicyness in the finish. Some clove and phenolic alcohol notes in the end. Very intresting and unique but not outstanding. According to ratebeer the best Japanese beer I had during my stay in Japan (no 23 at the moment). But for me personally it was only in the best 80%.

I’m a beginner, so I don’t have a detailed comment, but I like this beer a lot.

Pours a cloudy ochre with virtually no head. Strong initial nose of mixed stone fruits which mellows with time. Thick, heady, sherried brew to taste but a bit too intense and under- not to say un-balanced.

330ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Hazy copper colour with a one finger off-white head. Aroma of malts, sweet caramel, dark fruit, yeast, spices. Sweet malty taste, dark fruit, hint of sake. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Decent beer.

Bouteille 33 cl - couleur cuivrée, belle mousse, odeur très agréable sur le caramel, les pruneaux, les fruits noirs, on retrouve ces éléments sur le goût qui assez complexe, finale sur le caramel
