Illuminatus (87), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Nov 7, 2006 Updated: May 17, 2008 500mL can from LCBO. Pours a very dark red/brown, translucent when held to light. Small, vanishing head leaves a decent amount of lace. Aroma of malt, fruit. Nicely complex flavour, nutty malt with a good touch of sweetness, some fruit flavour, good level of hops. Finishes clean, bit of a nutty aftertaste, with a nice light body. Good when older, but superb when fresh (less than a month old).
chops (28), Brantford, Ontario, Canada Aug 7, 2008 473 ml can fromt the LCBO. Dark, lots of enjoyable flavors. One of my favorite local beers. I will definetly buy this again. Trev (479), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Aug 5, 2008 Pours a nice ruby brown with a quickly bubbly head.
Aroma is dark roast, chocolate, nutty and some molasses. A little raisin and brandy type sweet alc tones as well.
Flavour was surprisingly pleasant. Nutty medium roast malt flavour, some weak coffee tones, light burnt bitterness.
Overall very drinkable, smooth yet enough flavour to justify buying. DuffMan (1915), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jul 2, 2008 Dark brown, clear, moderate head. Toasty, slightly burnt malt aroma. Flavours of darkly roasted malts, chocolate. Comes across as more of a schwarz style. azlondon (480), Greater London, England Jul 1, 2008 Appearance: Very dark redish brown. Little head.
Aroma: Dark fruit. Roasted. Metallic.
Taste: Roasted, burnt. Dark fruit. Malty. Slightly metallic.
Info: 473ml can, 8/12-2007 dkachur (723), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jun 27, 2008 473 mL can from matt7215. Thanks! This is a brown ale? Huh. Wouldn’t have guessed when I tasted this during a Ratebeer site crash. Reddish brown pour with a medium frothy head. Grainy roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is very strong coffee with some grainy notes. A little thin but very pleasant.
